Remember kids: if the government shutdown this weekend, that includes the FCC.
I've got my RF modulator hooked up already. NTSC analog TV on VHF channel 6 is ready to go the instant the government shuts down.
Pirate TV forever!

@foone

When the killer clown down here fucks up our FCC equivalent (ENACOM) that will the bright spot in my life: scanning the airwaves for pirate transmissions!

@foone

They're coming to get me!

@foone At 12:01 AM it’ll be like the opposite of a TV station ending its broadcast day. You’ll have to show this, but in reverse: https://youtu.be/Cnchea6LHN0?si=e4qoEWhq5QFs4w-d
TV sign off

@foone if you take up a signal space while the FCC is inactive, does that mean that you become grandfathered when the FCC resumes operation?
@foone How many kW?
@darryl_ramm @foone Spelled "megawatts" wrong.
@robotfactory @darryl_ramm @foone so that’s what the Microsoft Datacenter power job is for, pirate tv, a suitcase bomb, or time travel.
@foone I'm pretty sure I've got all the bits and baubles needed to tune in, but to properly display the output? . . . Might need a few capacitors replaced there
@foone Hypothetically, does that mean you could jam all cell signals until they figure shit out? That would certainly light a fire under their asses

@sergiopantalone
Hypothetically you can do whatever you want anytime until they figure it out. You just have longer to get it done before you have to bounce sometimes.

@foone

@foone So why are they supposed to shutdown?
@lispi314 the usual reasons: holding the government hostage over appropriation bills

@lispi314
The government needs to pass a budget so they can continue to spend money, but certain members are refusing unless their stupid ideas are passed as well. If no budget is passed, the government can't spend money, which means they can't pay any employees or pay for any programs.

But of course the pay for these members during this is unaffected, so they don't feel any direct consequences of their actions.
@foone

@abrobston @foone why is that a thing? what'll happen on october 1st?
@luna @foone It's a thing because our dysfunctional Congress couldn't even pass a bill in the House of Representatives to keep funding the government until today. It's not even a disagreement between parties. Rather, the Republican house majority couldn't even agree on something to pass. If the Senate approves the House bill, we won't have a shutdown (for now). Gift link: https://wapo.st/3ZE1jId
House fails to pass short-term funding bill as shutdown looms

Congress is racing against the clock to avoid a federal government shutdown ahead of an Oct. 1 deadline.

The Washington Post
@foone remember what they took from us

@foone FYI: just because the US government will shut down, doesn't mean all workers will stop, well, working, they just won't get paid, unless they are essential workers.

This means it is possible some FCC employee will spend the time in which the government is shut down, checking if anyone is pirating analog TV, for no payment at all. Not sure why anyone would do that, but they are in their right to do that.

Edit: I am wrong see below

@minekpo1 @foone all government employees except essential ones will be sent home, and no employees will be paid even the essential ones.
@witch_of_winter @foone oh sorry, thanks for the correction!

@foone I've been looking a lot recently into how as an individual to legally broadcast TV signals for entertainment purposes. Turns out it's basically completely illegal unless broadcasts are limited to like 200ft, or you use something like LoRa (and even then maybe not?), and spread the word to everyone in the nearby area to build LoRa based TVs.

So this post satisfies me more than I can put into words

@foone
I'm imagining a great sf novel which begins:

"The sky above the port was the color of a television tuned to a channel swamped by a billion competing pirate tv stations after the FCC was shutdown."

@foone I'm gonna play some Metallica on an amateur radio frequency, kill two birds with one stone.
@foone I will forever maintain that OTA channel 4 in the 4 meter band (70 Mhz) should have been given to us ham radio ops in the USA.
