lol so Amazon Prime announces they're moving everyone by default to an ad supported tier unless you pay more, and now Disney+ is also introducing an ad supported tier as well as account sharing/login restrictions on devices outside your home a la Netflix.
Media companies you had an ecosystem where you could still make money and it was cheaper than cable and more convenient than "piracy" so us consumers were all for it.
"Piracy" was basically defeated and now the tides are rising again.... 🤣

"Piracy" is accessibility. "Piracy" is knowledge sharing. "Piracy" is innovation. "Piracy" is resistance to closed ecosystems. "Piracy" is media preservation.
"Pirated"/"illegal" ROMs are why we can still access and play old games.
"Piracy" is discoverability and is its own form of marketing which drives sales.
And I'm absolutely not saying that people shouldn't be paid for their creative work, but it's not us consumers doing the stealing.
@totalclaireity @dandb (I do want to add that most of the time the creatives aren’t getting paid anyways when it comes to older games. Just like I don’t get a cent for any software I’ve written in the last 20+ years, above my salary.
I absolutely do want creatives to be able to live and create more for me to enjoy. But let’s be clear about who gets the big bucks here:( )
@totalclaireity on top of all the inconvenient moneygrabbing, streaming platforms silently yanking things from availability is driving it for me. I saw a tiktok ad for a HBO Max animated series and all the top comments were "so it's going to get quietly cancelled, no physical release, and become totally unavailable after a year or two, right? just like infinity train?"

Yeah removing content for tax write-off purposes annoys me for so many reasons.
At the very least I feel if their able to pull it for tax writeoff reasons, they should be forced to make the content public domain so it's still available to everyone.

Not only the ad thingy is very alarming but also the constant rise of "special channels" you shall pay for ON TOP of the "basic" streaming. Want season4 of lower decks? Oh look, now its on the paramount+ thing and not in "basic premium" (these words dont seem to fit well).
It really is. The /only/ benefit is that you can sub/unsub on a month to month basis to rotate out what you're watching.
That is until they start forcing you to sub for 3, 6, 12 month periods anyway (cause I'd be willing to bet that's coming too!)
I'll watch season 4 after the finale in November because of this nonsense : (

the idea with "squatting" was "making use of something that would not be exhaustively used otherwise" (as with digital distribution you always copy the data around, it cannot ever be used exhaustively)

It's not as if I were to get the master copies, but just a digital replica that can be inifinitely duplicated at basically negligible cost.
Also the residuals paid to artists who actually create the content are far higher (see #WGA & #SAGAFTA #Strikes) for those than for #Streaming.

That's... not exactly what I said.
From the mainstream consumer of media perspective yes piracy was basically defeated as people were given better access to streaming content.
Now that those options are steadily getting worse, the pendulum is swinging back to the piracy side again for the average consumer.
