lol so Amazon Prime announces they're moving everyone by default to an ad supported tier unless you pay more, and now Disney+ is also introducing an ad supported tier as well as account sharing/login restrictions on devices outside your home a la Netflix.

Media companies you had an ecosystem where you could still make money and it was cheaper than cable and more convenient than "piracy" so us consumers were all for it.

"Piracy" was basically defeated and now the tides are rising again.... 🤣

@totalclaireity finally, the peasants have forgotten about the pagan arts of torrents and peer to peer networks

(we have not)

@barometz

Those who forgot will learn again as the rising tide begins to float all boats.

@totalclaireity In this age of streaming ads and streamers purging stuff from their catalogues, piracy seems like the only sane way forward.

@dandb

"Piracy" is accessibility. "Piracy" is knowledge sharing. "Piracy" is innovation. "Piracy" is resistance to closed ecosystems. "Piracy" is media preservation.

"Pirated"/"illegal" ROMs are why we can still access and play old games.

"Piracy" is discoverability and is its own form of marketing which drives sales.

And I'm absolutely not saying that people shouldn't be paid for their creative work, but it's not us consumers doing the stealing.

@totalclaireity @dandb (I do want to add that most of the time the creatives aren’t getting paid anyways when it comes to older games. Just like I don’t get a cent for any software I’ve written in the last 20+ years, above my salary.

I absolutely do want creatives to be able to live and create more for me to enjoy. But let’s be clear about who gets the big bucks here:( )

@breadbin @totalclaireity @dandb
That's the thing- if only copyright fulfilled its stated purpose of encouraging creatives by paying them there'd be some point to it.
And the money lost to 'piracy' is imaginary money.
@totalclaireity @dandb fun fact: a lot of old rockstar games on steam were/still are pirate versions of those games, because Rockstar couldn't be bothered to remove copy protection themselves.
@totalclaireity @dandb Yes! And „piracy“ is participation for those who are forced to be poor in and by capitalism.

@totalclaireity @dandb +9001%

#Piracy isn't #theft if #buying media isn't #owning access to it in perpetuality!

@totalclaireity @dandb cant pirate my games if theyre free
@totalclaireity Seems like just the same ol enshittification process. @pluralistic
@totalclaireity “Defeated” unless you’re an archivist. My media is forever.

@totalclaireity on top of all the inconvenient moneygrabbing, streaming platforms silently yanking things from availability is driving it for me. I saw a tiktok ad for a HBO Max animated series and all the top comments were "so it's going to get quietly cancelled, no physical release, and become totally unavailable after a year or two, right? just like infinity train?"

the reasons for pirating that have nothing to do with saving money just keep on growing

@catdad

Yeah removing content for tax write-off purposes annoys me for so many reasons.

At the very least I feel if their able to pull it for tax writeoff reasons, they should be forced to make the content public domain so it's still available to everyone.

@totalclaireity and nowadays streaming torrents is even easier!
@totalclaireity "was basically defeated" says who

@ada

Defeated in the sense that the average consumer of media was no longer/rarely pirating because they had easy, cheap, and convenient access to the content.

@totalclaireity oh in that sense yeah

though ever since netflix removed firefly i've been uneasy about it
@totalclaireity Funny how this continues to be relevant.

@faoluin @totalclaireity

Not only the ad thingy is very alarming but also the constant rise of "special channels" you shall pay for ON TOP of the "basic" streaming. Want season4 of lower decks? Oh look, now its on the paramount+ thing and not in "basic premium" (these words dont seem to fit well).

@Zitruskeks @totalclaireity It's cable packages all over again.

@faoluin @Zitruskeks

It really is. The /only/ benefit is that you can sub/unsub on a month to month basis to rotate out what you're watching.

That is until they start forcing you to sub for 3, 6, 12 month periods anyway (cause I'd be willing to bet that's coming too!)

@totalclaireity @faoluin
Yea.
I used the 30 day trial for strange new worlds, unsubbed and now they have me captured with lower decks.

@Zitruskeks @faoluin

I'll watch season 4 after the finale in November because of this nonsense : (

@totalclaireity @faoluin Sad.

But then you can binge it! And november isn't that far any more (for the better or the worse)

I'll wish you tons of fun already!

@Zitruskeks

That's true! Maybe I'll rewatch seasons 1 - 3 again before I do.

@Zitruskeks @faoluin

I haven't even watched any of Season 4 yet because they pulled it off Crave in Canada so now you have to watch it on Paramount+ : (

@faoluin @totalclaireity @SallyStrange Some aspect of my mom’s Roku or whatever streaming service she uses now displays ads when she’s paused. 🚽
@corbden wow fuck that shit. I've been using a Roku lately and it goes in the bin if they start that @faoluin @totalclaireity

@corbden @faoluin @SallyStrange

Sounds like it would be heading for the Office Space treatment

@[email protected] €0, weil ich #Abozwang shice finde und wenn überhaupt.#Content auf physischen Datenträgern & #DRM-frei kaufe!

@kkarhan @faoluin @totalclaireity if paying isn’t owning, it’s rent - so you aren’t stealing but squatting

@brezelradar @faoluin @totalclaireity Nope.

I just don't sign any contract that isn't to my.terms.nor use any services with unacceptable ToS!

You know physical media without DRM are a thing?

@brezelradar @faoluin @totalclaireity also that comparison is bs and you know it:
#Housing is a #HumanRight - access to Entertainment Media is not!

norden.social

@kkarhan @faoluin @totalclaireity fair point

the idea with "squatting" was "making use of something that would not be exhaustively used otherwise" (as with digital distribution you always copy the data around, it cannot ever be used exhaustively)

@brezelradar @faoluin @totalclaireity furthermore me buying #DRM-free physical media is neither preventing nor reducing the streaming platforms' capability to generate revenue with their content.

It's not as if I were to get the master copies, but just a digital replica that can be inifinitely duplicated at basically negligible cost.

Also the residuals paid to artists who actually create the content are far higher (see #WGA & #SAGAFTA #Strikes) for those than for #Streaming.

@kkarhan @faoluin @totalclaireity paying a monthly fee pretty to get access to something seems pretty much like rent to me

@brezelradar @faoluin @totalclaireity
Unlike housing there's no law forcing me to have a lease.

The comparison is also bad because my landlord doesn't add and espechally doesn't get to remove features at will from the leased condo.

@totalclaireity

Piracy is defeated? Really?

Amazing.

@ParadeGrotesque

That's... not exactly what I said.

From the mainstream consumer of media perspective yes piracy was basically defeated as people were given better access to streaming content.

Now that those options are steadily getting worse, the pendulum is swinging back to the piracy side again for the average consumer.

@totalclaireity

That's a lot clearer, and I very much agree with your statement.

@ParadeGrotesque

I don't think it'll matter if my character limit is 280, 500, 1000, or 10,000, I'll always not have enough room to get everything down without running out of space 😂

I'm very wordy haha

@totalclaireity

Change a couple of dates on this one, and I believe it is pretty much on point... 😉

(Don't worry about your wordiness, I am often much much worse!)

@totalclaireity Piracy has gone beyond the High Seas! Piracy is true freedom from enshitification at this point.

@totalclaireity Exactly.

If it's less convenient than buying #BluRay|s or #Torrenting then people won't do it.

#AppleMusic killed #eD2k, not litigation!

@totalclaireity i need to buy more storage space
@totalclaireity @koval_blazej and where does this info come from? I don’t see it anywhere…
