Whenever the media want to talk about Biden’s age, remember that I am more than six years older than that kid, and both of us could run circles around the Orange Guy.

Oh, and Biden’s never been charged with a felony, let alone 91 of them. Just saying.

@georgetakei i’d still rather see someone who has to live with the consequences of their decisions making those decisions

@fluffy @georgetakei At some point, yes. Harris is relatively young and she's probably going to take the mantle when Biden's next term is up.

That said, a good person cares about what's going to happen to future generations, and does what they can to make things better. Age is less of an issue than simply caring.

@textualdeviance @georgetakei Sure, and I mean Biden is way better than most of the alternatives right now. It's just that the system hasn't given us many choices here. I feel like a vegetarian in a steakhouse, and Biden is the macaroni and cheese.
@fluffy @georgetakei In order for someone to acquire the experience necessary to actually do the job of POTUS, they have to put in the time in smaller-scale offices. If you want younger candidates for top offices, then people have to start running for city and county-level seats as soon as they're out of college. Those don't actually require anywhere near the financial resources to run for, either. But too many people don't want to do that work.

@textualdeviance @fluffy @georgetakei

physically, Biden is only half, maybe a third, of the man Trump is.

@jimhillhouse

Please don't confuse physical state with morality.

It's not clever, and it just tells the world you conflate being fat with being right-wing. Which is a pretty stupid thing to do.

@jimhillhouse @fluffy @georgetakei We can talk about this without the fatphobia.
@textualdeviance I'll get right on that @georgetakei
@fluffy @georgetakei I hope you do. Seriously. I love seeing young people run for office.
@textualdeviance @georgetakei I was being sarcastic. I am neither young nor a politician.
@fluffy @georgetakei What do you think "a politician" is?
@textualdeviance @georgetakei Someone who has opted to go into politics as their career.
@fluffy And what about people who have chosen public service, in the form of elected office? Or is it harder for you to dismiss when it's put like that?
@textualdeviance that fits my definition yes. I don’t see why you think I’m dismissing any of that and anyway this entire conversation is pretty tedious. Did I personally offend you by wishing we had more diversity in our political system? Because that’s all I’m wishing for here, regardless of how much you’re trying to interpret me as saying whatever it is you think I’m saying.
@fluffy I just find that a lot of people who complain that current elected officials aren't doing enough or aren't good enough, etc. don't do all that much to change things. It's tiresome to hear people whining about "old" Congressfolk when a lot of them can't even be bothered to vote, much less volunteer or run for office themselves. It's a put up or shut up thing, IMHO.

@textualdeviance wow you’re assuming a lot about me and also reading a lot into my tiny milquetoast criticism of the state of the presidential election

If someone wanted to support me making a run for politics, sure, that’d be great. They’d be trying to elect a socialist disabled neurodivergent trans nonbinary furry. Good luck with that.

@textualdeviance I happily support whatever candidates show up and vote in every single election. I even agonize over every little decision at the local level including things like the school board. I am politically involved and very deeply impacted by the politics. You don’t get to tell me I don’t care enough just because I’m slightly critical of the state of affairs. I’m not even critical of Biden! Just the system that put him in place.
@textualdeviance my political alignment is somewhere between Kshama Sawant and Bernie Sanders. Closer on the Sawant side. I would love to see her make it further up in politics. That doesn’t seem bloody likely.
@fluffy That's because most voters aren't interested in far-left policies, not because of some shadowy "system" getting in the way. If you want those candidates to win, then they have to appeal to voters.
@fluffy And forgive me, but I've heard so many people with the same complaints assume that there's some DNC conspiracy or other nonsense behind this, instead of just the reality. If that's not your thing, fair.

@textualdeviance you say there’s no “system,” right after describing exactly what the system is. It’s not a conspiracy, it’s a maintenance of the status quo. It’s a system in the greater sense of how politics operates. Emergent properties, not specific actions taken by individuals.

Whenever people refer to a system, that’s usually what they mean. The entire environment in which things take place.

@textualdeviance like compare it to the term “systemic racism.” It’s not that people specifically go out of their way to be racist, it’s that there are emergent and established structures in place that maintain racism at a societal level.

It is in that way that people talk about the political system.

@textualdeviance @fluffy

The New York State legislature got six socialists elected in the 1920s. The rest of the legislature immediately stripped them of their positions, unanimously. That was the system.

The Red Scare made it illegal to have socialist leanings or teach honestly about socialism. That was the system.

Today, how educated are voters on leftist politics? How misinformed are they? That's a deliberate choice by everyone who owns a media company, everyone who makes and sells textbooks, and all politicians to the right of Bernie Sanders.

That's the system.

You can't support something if you don't know what it is.

@textualdeviance @fluffy so this whole thread has been going "oh you can change things by getting into politics! join up and be the change you want to see!" and when someone explicitly tells you WHAT they want to see, you tell them "no not that."

god liberals are pathetic.

@textualdeviance @fluffy do you see why, perhaps, people are disillusioned with your system? your candidates? you're actually hearing, directly, from someone at the intersection of MULTIPLE political issues, they are TELLING YOU what would make them feel like you had anything to offer, and you're telling them "well i'm not going to do that because, even though part of being a politician is INFLUENCING ideas, 'the american public' don't want that." pathetic.

@textualdeviance @fluffy @georgetakei

We have experience in the UK of folks doing PPE degrees and going straight into politics. Unfortunately these people don't tend to make very good representatives, as they have no worldly experience outside of politics.

@textualdeviance @fluffy @georgetakei A good country enshrines consideration of future generations in law. Biden/Harris should consider following Wales lead.

https://www.futuregenerations.wales/about-us/future-generations-act/

Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015 – The Future Generations Commissioner for Wales

@textualdeviance @fluffy @georgetakei
White Republicans are afraid of a strong black woman who refuses to take a back seat to mediocre white men.

@fluffy @georgetakei

Your not going to find anyone remotely qualified to be president with a fraction of the empathy of Joe Biden, who knows damn well the import of his decisions for his grandkids and all of their generation.

It's fine to wish for things, critical to make momentous decisions with eyes wide open to the reality of available options.

@joeinwynnewood @georgetakei I'm not saying not to vote for Biden, just that I wish we had better options
@fluffy @georgetakei
It's not at all clear there are better options.
Sure, there are a number of accomplished Democratic governors, Members of Congress, etc., but none of them have run a nationwide campaign, let alone a successful one.
Nor have any of them run the federal government, nor moved multiple historic bills through Congress with razor thin majorities.
Joe Biden has done all of that and more, and he has the power of the incumbency too, not to be sniffed at.
@joeinwynnewood @georgetakei I mean yeah that’s exactly the problem I was complaining about so

@fluffy @georgetakei

So let me get this straight, you're complaining that we have an outstanding candidate who's already accomplished a shit-ton for America because he won't be around to see the full impact of everything he's done and will do?

@joeinwynnewood @georgetakei “Biden is the best we have available at this time” and “I wish the state of US politics were such that Biden weren’t the best we had available” are compatible thoughts.

@fluffy @georgetakei

I'm sorry God isn't available so we're stuck with the guy with the most impactful presidency in over 50 years.

@joeinwynnewood @georgetakei feel free to keep on willfully misinterpreting me based on what you've imagined I've said instead of what I've actually said

@fluffy @georgetakei

I read what you wrote. You wrote that you want someone younger. Then you wrote you wish there was someone better (defined in part by your prior words as younger).

I made it clear there isn't anyone better, not because there aren't many excellent possibilities, but because we already have an outstanding President running for a richly deserved 2nd term which is apparently still not good enough for you.

@joeinwynnewood @fluffy @georgetakei Regardless of how excellent a president Biden has been (I'm not going to take a stance there), I feel like it's fair to say that anyone who's basically running neck and neck with Literal Satan is not an outstanding _candidate_.

@shaterri @fluffy @georgetakei

With negative partisanship, the right-wing echo chamber & epic failure of for profit media, each side starts at ~46%.

Jesus, Ghandi & Mother Theresa together would poll at maybe 48% in this environment, especially 13 months out with an active (if pathetic) GOP primary & no Democratic primary.

Give a listen to the Pod Save America guys some time, they do a good job explaining this stuff.
Also read Simon Rosenberg's Hopium Chronicles for a good view of the race.

@fluffy I don't think people in power think this way in general. Hence the climate crisis.

@georgetakei

@fluffy @georgetakei biden dies, you get harris. Orange guy dies (probably more likely), you get who? Someone even more unhinged and self serving than orange guy
@Jamesboswell @georgetakei Yes, Biden and Harris are better than "the other guy" but that doesn't mean things couldn't be improved upon

@georgetakei the media is failing so badly right now. :( We have a major party of actual fascists openly fighting tooth and nail to end our democracy, and all the media is focusing on is this blown-up Biden age issue, without mentioning Trump's age and health.

It's almost like many in the media would be just fine with fascist rule.

@jamesmarshall @georgetakei
The media pundits won't be laughing if fascists shut down the free press and hire propagandists in their place.
@jamesmarshall @georgetakei NBC, Fox, Forbes, WAPO, et al. Are all billionaire owned screeds owned or influenced by subversive corrupt cabals like the Federalist Society. They have corrupted SCOTUS to control America.
@jamesmarshall @georgetakei of course they believe they’ll profit off “ratings” when the mad circus is put back in the People’s House. They also believe they’ll enjoy tax cuts hence their brazen attempts to legitimize Trump. People ought to realize we simply cannot trust the corporate media! They’ve simply gone from terrible to willing collaborators in the evil enterprise of bringing down the world’s greatest democracy. #CorruptMedia.
@jamesmarshall @georgetakei MSM exists for no purpose other than to maximize short term revenue. That's what for-profit, billionaire-owned business do. Of course, some are better at that than others.
@jamesmarshall
Trump's outrageous behavior generates media viewers, which equals $$$$. For outlets like fox, who support trump, it's business as usual.
@georgetakei
Who among us hasn't been charged with 91 felony counts in four different jurisdictions?
@georgetakei how many felonies have you been charged with George? Or are you just not trying?

@georgetakei good point George.

I prefer my Presidents to have fewer felony indictments than their age 🙂

@georgetakei
I think he also hasn't raped anyone, gotten a prospective wife pregnant while still married to another one, lied about his education, the list goes on and on...
@georgetakei you're more qualified to be president than either of them
@katzenamt @georgetakei I'd vote for him.
@hosford42 @katzenamt @georgetakei I wouldn't, not in the primary anyway. Running the country shouldn't be a retirement gig. I know folks can still be plenty sharp even at 100, but the attitude about changing things tends to be lacking and single payer healthcare when??
