In case you were wondering…

Yes, Canada is still on fire. Even though summer has gone by and the traditional wildfire season is over, hundreds of forest fires continue burning, most of them out of control.

This is intensely sad to me, not to mention frightening, and it’s a blatantly ominous sign that we are in the midst of a climate emergency.

@breadandcircuses And here's the live view from space: PM1 particles. There have been sightings of stratospheric smoke layers from the western UK over the past few days.
@JanPV @breadandcircuses That is a forecast actually, although it is a reasonably accurate visualization of PM1. Here’s the recent satellite view: https://zoom.earth/maps/satellite/#view=58.149,-118.417,6z/date=2023-09-22,21:50/overlays=heat

@zoom_earth @JanPV
even so, won't that low spinning off the BC coast bring much-needed rain to the situation?

@breadandcircuses

@draNgNon @zoom_earth @JanPV @breadandcircuses Only so much the rain can do, when there's been too little of it for too long.

And as temperatures increase, more and more thawed & rotting permafrost will be burning underground for decades to come.

@JanPV @breadandcircuses from earthnullschool ? Why not mention....
@groms Clear off and be obsessive somewhere else. Bye!
@breadandcircuses and it SHOULD be a wakeup call to people who thought "oh we can just move north" that climate change is CHANGE so don't expect "north" to stay as you think of it.
@fencepost @breadandcircuses I just returned a few minutes ago from a walk along the Gryffe river in Scotland. All the wild roses were making hips and the bushes were thick with hundreds of Red Admirals (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-66395590). Scotland is north and hundreds of migratory butterflies staying here over the winter is a huge, unnerving change.
Red Admiral butterflies: Climate change sees migratory species stay in UK, says charity

Conservation charity says climate change means migratory species is increasingly staying in the UK.

@breadandcircuses It surely feels too close to home (literally) for #Yellowknife residents who were forced to cancel their welcome home party after their evacuation last month and return a few weeks back. Seems it's still too smokey there

@breadandcircuses Absolutely heart-wrenching.
@breadandcircuses Awful! Do officials provide any realistic estimates when they extinguish the fire?
@breadandcircuses I have read that forest fires can smoulder indefinitely and may even last through the Canadian winter. This is shocking and frightening. It appears that there may really be no end to fire season, it will just vary in intensity.
@breadandcircuses It's distressing to witness the damage to nature, regardless of the reasons behind it. I believe in the importance of caring for our environment and preserving our natural resources. We all have a role to play in ensuring a healthy planet for future generations.
@breadandcircuses they should shut down their tar sands operations.
@breadandcircuses
Yes but entrenched financial interests hold sway. Until food production actually collapses government won't take serious action. Of course, then it will be too late.
@breadandcircuses now if the fires were in downtown Toronto we might get some MSM airplay?
@breadandcircuses
That's so alarming and very sad.
@breadandcircuses Good luck hearing about this in regular news and/or propaganda sites.
@breadandcircuses A couple of weeks ago I read 40.77 million acres had burned and over 232,000 evacuations had taken place. However, there are no plans to cease filthy Alberta tar sands operations.
@breadandcircuses its going to make this winter cold af
