I think about this video of French rollerbladers from 1923 at least once every month.

@rolle @neauoire @GustavinoBevilacqua I think those dudes vaulting the cars are from Chile!
@rolle @GustavinoBevilacqua @ndpi @neauoire I have a pair of those spring stilts! They're a lot of fun. I was never brave enough to do acrobatics on them but just sprinting on them feels wild.

@rolle @neauoire @GustavinoBevilacqua

This always makes me think of Springheeled Jack, a British folkcharacter (and later protagonist of penny dreadfuls) from the 19th century.

@iju @rolle @neauoire @GustavinoBevilacqua If the roles are reversed, could be the illustration for Poe's "Never Bet the Devil Your Head" (though <SPOILER!> that was set in a covered bridge, with an unfortunately placed cross bar).
@GustavinoBevilacqua @neauoire Dang, I wanna meet friends like this!
@neauoire Way cooler than thinking about the Roman Empire all the time
@stribley @neauoire wait… you too?
@priminatt @neauoire No, not me. Buncha other dudes, tho, apparently.

@neauoire Damn! Those "skates" are actually far superior in that their wheels are far bigger, so they would go over bumps and cracks without stopping, far more effectively. You can see this in the part where they're skating over a forest trail, something you'd almost never be able to do with standard roller blades/skates.

I would love to see a modern version of these large wheeled skates!

@neauoire off to get a baguette like
@neauoire Welp, this buried memory has now been reawakened. Thanks for giving me nightmares tonight!
@naeemthm @neauoire Oh my, what is that from?
@naeemthm @neauoire Oops, I should have read the alt text. What a coincidence, I was about to watch that tonight!

@naeemthm @neauoire

Oh, I was so scared of those back in the day.

Still am, to tell the truth.

@neauoire @lisamelton that is super neat. Thanks for sharing!
@neauoire that's so cool - it reminds me of the 'heel-ies' shoes that boomed about 15-20 years ago.

@andr_w @neauoire

Heelies were never a thing where I'm from, but saw a kid use them while I was visiting a Scottish shopping centre. Didn't even know they existed before seeing them in the wild. A kid rolled few metres before starting to walk normally.

My first idea was that my sensory intake must have been confused somehow, followed by a short second when I started doubting the laws of nature itself.

Thankfully I could see the kid repeat the performance, so could come to sane conclusion.

@neauoire why do I feel like this is better than what we have now?
@neauoire I'm telling my kids this was the Citroen 2CV.
@neauoire Look at those sick 20's tricks!
@neauoire
Better setup than this one.

@12thRITS @neauoire

Your alt text on that horse image is excellent! 💯

@bayport @neauoire
I have fun writing them. Also fun when someone notices!

@12thRITS @neauoire

That’s great. I often think it would be fun to add secret or additional info in image alt texts and also a way to extended character limits. But in the end I get lazy and tend to write the bare minimum

@neauoire
I saw someone a few years ago with similar skates except the wheels angled under the shoe so that the tire touch point was centered under the foot. Don't know how that affected handling.
@neauoire I was a bit dubious because it is in colour, but I found the full B&W film from Pathe. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UjtPn4orR9A I realise the technology of the heely shoes is basically the same, but here the heel is used to brake!

@neauoire search for "Chariot Skates".
@neauoire OMG!! So Ozma of Oz’s Rolly wheel guys must have come from this!
@neauoire trust the French...originators of the penny-farthing bicycle and Citroën 2CV automobile...to invent such a fabulously silly form of wheeled transportation

@neauoire

I might be able to convert a pair of stilts into a pair of these.

added to the 'completely mad ideas' list.

@RussSharek @neauoire I had no idea I wanted rollerblade stilts, but here we are

@nyquildotorg @neauoire

I have heard of one performer who roller skated on stilts. It's a terrifying concept to me.

@neauoire The Wheelers from Return to Oz!
@neauoire how do you break though ?
@subbak you can break by kicking the heels
@neauoire
I can't stop watching. Looks great.
@neauoire they’re kind of cool. Definitely should be revived.
@neauoire those actually look way easier to use than modern ones... 🤔
@neauoire Can't stop watching! 🤣🥸
@neauoire they are freaking cool, ngl. I wish I had the skill to use them.
@neauoire They look safer. A larger wheel is always safer.
need a pair of those! looks so fun. all terrain skating
