My opinion about Mapcomplete after 1,2k edits most with pictures.

After a few sporadic edits i realised that Mapcomplete offers a new dimension of mapping. I feel like the beginning of OSM. Almost at every corner its possible to upload pictures=information. No pictures need to be boring. Neither the clock on the building, nor the bench with a view or bicycle parking with oldtown in background. Additionally add some details. www.mapcomplete.org

@SeeandMap A potential longer term problem is the fragmentation - StreetComplete has its own picture storage, MapComplete it's own...
Would it make sense to have that as a central function?

Of course, that would have many challenges and risks of its own.

@richlv

I thought the images in Streetcomplete were deleted when the note was edited.

@SeeandMap I've heard so too, they are rather transient. Checking the images later could be helpful longer term, and perhaps some centralised approach could help.

Images are a bit a tough one. If osm.org offered picture storage, I would - no doubt - upload them there. Currently, Imgur is used to upload the pictures, but they are backed up regularly on my machine (it's only 20GB for now, for ~25K pictures)

Wikimedia isn't really an option (see https://github.com/pietervdvn/MapComplete/issues/99)

Mapillary would be fitting, but has it's own problems (https://github.com/pietervdvn/MapComplete/issues/1451#issuecomment-1619213492)

I'm eying #GeoVisio, but haven't found the time to integrate them yet.

imgur display advertising 😞 and Wikimedia Commons is well supported by others Osmose applications. It will be useful to use it 😄

Yeah, I'm #9 contributor to Mapillary, worldwide, and I wouldn't recommend it for this purpose :)

Core OSM doing this could be a huge improvement, but also difficult (in several ways) to implement.

@richlv @SeeandMap Wow, impressive amount of pictuers!
@SeeandMap
Do you keep switching between themes to upload pictures corresponding to different themes? Or do you concentrate on one theme at a time?
@alan
When I am travelling alone and have more time, I upload pictures without preferences and answer the questions, even if each change is a bit tedious. If Im not alone and don't have much time, I just take pictures and upload them later or set the POIs. The Personal theme is good, where can be shown all sorts of things. The problem is that you can't upload any pictures (at the moment).

@SeeandMap Still, those are pictures, not map improvements. Meaning, it's just a picture storage at this point. Like Mapillary.

@zverik
On each picture at least i added some information from the Mapcomplete questionnaire. Most POI i add via Osmand and then i add the picture via Mapcomplete and answering the questions. But slowly i add more POI via Mapcomplete and add the picture.

The Osmand App shows the picture so you can see in advance hpw for example a picnic place, artwork, etc looks.
