I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it a thousand times: If the punishment for breaking a law is a fine, then that law only exists for the poor.
@Strandjunker instructions unclear, parking violations now punishable by hard jail time.
@your_huckleberry @Strandjunker Well no? IMO not the information in the original toot.
@Strandjunker if they want fines they should make them means tested and then watch how much the rich people shit themselves.
@Strandjunker in Finland the fine is related to income
Finland's "progressive punishment" when it comes to speeding tickets

Did you know getting a speeding ticket in Finland can either be very expensive or very cheap?

@dhrystone @Strandjunker

Dammit, I should have known someone would beat me to this response!

@Strandjunker we used to call them speeding permits.
@Strandjunker i am fine with a fine, but it should always be coupled to the monthly income and/or the total "value" of a person's assets (in whichever form).
If a fine doesn't inflict the same punishment to everyone, then it's just for poor people.
@Strandjunker Very true! Except in those countries where fines are proportionate to income.
Millionaire fined a record $130,000 for speeding in Finland, where penalties are based on income

Millionaire fined a record $130,000 for speeding in Finland, where penalties are based on income

WION
@Jon_Kramer @Strandjunker wow I feel very insignificant knowing that an average millionaire from Finland "makes" an average UK salary every day
@Strandjunker Yeah. Minor campaign contribution violations...only for the poor. Whatever...
@Strandjunker So true, especially traffic related ‘infringements’ the wealthy have it all stacked in their favour, where ever is the ‘level’ playing field in democratic societies? Why does it seem that all is pushed aside or turned around to suit the few wealthy/power hungry people?
@Strandjunker and if a company is fined no director loses a penny. Network Rail fined for safety accident so have less money for safety work
@Strandjunker what do you propose? Erase from law minor crimes or arrest everyone for the minimal infraction?
People write all kind of BS without even thinking...
Independent of the amount of money you have, no one likes to pay penalties.
@Strandjunker 💯👏🏼👏🏼👍🏽
@Strandjunker Unless the fine is proportional to your income or net worth — it should hurt everyone equally.
@Strandjunker People that don't agree with this either don't understand math or real life or both.

I am so sick of misleading reporting by journos. Applies to all forms of media, but BBC particularly gets my goat bc they're supposed to be the Gold Standard. The trouble is language - nvm the ungrammatical ignorance, it's the unnecessary, misleading, "colourful" words that are really getting me!
I don't know if they all think they're Dickens, or it's dodgy political spinning, but a few creepy examples -

Asteroids are not "carefully" preserved. HS2 was not "dreamed up". AIs do not "imagine".

@Strandjunker

Succinct and true. This is the first time I’ve heard it put so well. I hope it becomes painted on walls, made into memes.
