PSA: #Patreon just announced they're changing their privacy policy to default all of your account info, who you support, etc. to public. You need to go into the settings and disable that. (Check the two toggles at the bottom of the Settings page to off.)

And then send Patreon a nasty letter, because default-open is just a stupid model to begin with, period.

@Crell Thanks, done. What on earth are Patreon thinking?!
@Crell
I’m atheist af, but JFC.

@subm3rge @Crell

Or, the more secular...

🤦‍♂️ FFS.

Hey, @vmstan thinking I'm going to ditch P for some other option. But don't fret, I got you.
@User47 we have Kofi too.
@vmstan @User47 last I checked, everyone you give money to is posted publicly on your Kofi account. There is no way to make those posts private, but you can delete them after the fact.
@Wbud @vmstan Kofi also shares data with Facebook. Ugh! (So did Patreon)
@User47 @Wbud well 💩
@vmstan @User47 @Wbud Brown paper bags of cash an option?
@bloyle @User47 @Wbud I’ve never published it but we also have the option to take Stripe payments directly.
@Crell this is stupid indeed!
@Crell Wow. It is absolutely NO ONE'S business who I choose to support, except the person/project I am supporting.

@Crell

I'm looking at my Patreon page, and trying to figure out how to cancel my account.

If anyone in this thread knows how and wouldn't mind informing me, I'd be very grateful.

@Crell I can't find anything on this on their site. Please share a link if you have one.

@[email protected] Email I just got from them. Their blog post is here, and of course makes it sound like a good thing: https://news.patreon.com/articles/patreon-all-in-on-community From the email: "Be on by default: You can turn your member profile off by adjusting your community profile setting, which is available on the web now and will be coming to our mobile apps soon. Learn more. If you turn your member profile off, your public profile will still be displayed to fellow community members. Learn more."

@Crell

Yet another manifestation of All Your Info Are Belong To Us which is, evidently, the New Tech Normal Business Model...

Yay.

@Crell
@kianryan

Suspect that default-open like this may also breach GDPR? Not sure.

@Crell I got tha email guess I should have read it.
off to fix my settings.
@Crell better yet - don't use Patreon. Use librapay instead.

@Crell Reminds me that there's no way to switch a bandcamp account to private - as soon as you have a profile, all purchases will be public.

The only workaround I know of is to buy music without creating an account (sadly I tried to consolidate my purchases paid with Paypal with those paid by credit card at some point).

@Crell
Thanks for the PSA!

"Hi there,

You've recently made a request to erase your data from Patreon. We will send you an email when the request is completed.

Thanks!

P.S.:  If you seek to erase your account, please remove all funds from your account immediately."

#privacy

@Crell why???

This has been a wild year. Did all the c-suites get together one drunken night and decide to make this the corp wtf moment?

@Crell Thank you! ❤️

I also got an email from Patreon but had not read it yet.

@Crell is it mobile app only?

Won't be installing those

Account has semi-random string as display name, unique email address and no connection to other accounts

They still shouldn't be giving my random string information to 3rd parties

@Crell
Thanks for the heads up - just changed settings accordingly.
@Crell thank you, found it at the bottom of the account tab.
@Crell does every tech company just blindly follow the enshittification roadmap?
@Crell I DELETED MY ACCOUNT. SHESH. I HAVE OTHER APPS.
@Crell These settings are on the Account tab on your settings page.
@Crell public was off, community was on.
@Crell I've had "Full public profile" turned off for a long time because as I understood it, the creators you support have always defaulted to public.
@Crell Huh, I don't see this... What's your source? I just see one toggle on the settings page. It says "Private Profile" and it's set to on for both my patron and creator profiles. Which means my pledges will be hidden from the public — how it's always been. The only other thing on that page is my email, which I cropped out. Maybe it's different on desktop?

@Crell OK. I found one post that lays a lot of this out. I'm still sorting it. I *think* the newly added public profiles — which seem to be what we would traditionally call a social media profile — are a good option. Are they trying to be discord? IDK. But I agree that if your member profile is currently set to private, it should remain as such until you decide otherwise.

@Crell

I'm guessing that this only applies to people who have a Patreon site and have subscribers and not the subscribers themselves?

@BillMcGuire No, I have just a supporter account and I had to turn those off.

@Crell

i support one guy, but I checked and couldn't find anywhere in settings info that could be shared except my address.

@Crell *OR* it would have been a fine model to *begin* with, but it's a terrible model to switch people to after they've accepted different terms.
@Crell easier just to delete my account. That's a toe dip in the waters of enshitification
@Crell What’s their reason for this? Not their comms phaff, but the real reason? Will it help make the website look more engaging to something? Bait-and-switch is the worst

@Crell Oh no, everyone is going to see all the gay porn that I support through paetreon.

This isn't a joke. Thats what's gonna happen.

@Crell Thank you for the warning. The similar thing happened with Discord months ago. It’s alarming that more and more platforms are either defaulting our privacy settings to public, or feeding our data to ML (‘AI’). Scary ASF
"because default-open is just a stupid model to begin with, period." @Crell comeon that's microsoft's and apple's model you're talking about
