A much-requested feature added to Mastodon 4.2.0 is the ability to follow accounts in Lists while hiding them from your Home timeline.

To do this:

1. Log into your server's website
2. Click on Lists (on mobile it's an icon with three dots and three lines)
3. Click on the list whose contents you want to hide on Home
4. Click the slider icon in the top right corner
5. Activate the option labelled "Hide these posts from home"

(Note that this hides the chosen list's entire contents from Home.)

@feditips This is a cool feature - thanks :) What I would love too is to have lists for different sets of hastags that I follow.

@flowti

Yes, that would be great!

If you're comfortable using Github, you can vote for such a feature by giving a thumbs up at https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/7692

Ability to add hashtags to lists · Issue #7692 · mastodon/mastodon

User can subscribe to hashtags adding them to the lists. I searched or browsed the repo’s other issues to ensure this is not a duplicate.

GitHub
@flowti @feditips you can do that with @IceCubesApp using their “Tag Groups”. It’s wonderful 🤗
@jds @feditips @IceCubesApp That looks cool :) Is it just for ios?
@feditips very useful article, thanks. Just getting used to masto.
@feditips Just the thing I need!

@feditips I thought this was available before 4.2.0? I've used this feature for a while now.

The great thing about this is that if you put everyone you follow in a list, you can make your Home timeline dedicated to just followed hashtags which is incredibly helpful.

I wish there was a timeline just for followed hashtags and their posts, but putting everyone in a list and hiding it from Home is a good alternative.

@FalconMarkSix

Lists has been available for several years, but version 4.2.0 allows you to hide lists from Home.

(Your server may have been running the preview version of 4.2.0 if you've already seen the Home-hiding feature there.)

@FalconMarkSix @feditips Yeah, I'm missing this feature too and so are dozens of users. There has been a Github issue opened for some while (=> https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/20715) but none of the updates has tackled it...
Add hashtag to list · Issue #20715 · mastodon/mastodon

Pitch As of 4.0 one can follow a hashtag so that it appears in one's home timeline. I suggest that one also be able to add a hashtag to a list, which would allow people to curate list composed of d...

@petrnuska @feditips I've always thought about signing up for github just to express support for these issues (another issue I'm interested in is the one asking for .opus support) but yeah I feel like there's no point since nothing gets fixed/resolved/updated. 😅

@FalconMarkSix

Btw, I started thinking about this workaround that you suggest ("... putting everyone in a list and hiding it from Home is a good alternative") but then I thought => wouldn't it mean that I would hide toots of people I follow AND use a hashtag I follow on my Home feed?

Would
@feditips know?

@petrnuska @feditips The toot would appear in both the list and Home feed. I see it a lot when a person I follow toots with a hashtag I follow.
@FalconMarkSix @feditips Thanks, good to know! I will give the workaround a try I think 😉

@petrnuska @feditips Hope it all goes well! Reply back if you have more questions.

BTW you don't have to put them all in *one*list. You can categorize your lists (one for pixel fed, another for bots, another for organizations, etc.) if you want then press the "Hide these posts from Home" button in each list.

@feditips @timpritlove war das nicht mal ein sehr gewünschtes Feature von dir?! Hoffe habe das nicht falsch im Kopf und der tag hier hilft dir weiter.
@feditips the new release is a bit high eh ;')

@feditips

Thanks for the tip about hiding particular lists from my home timeline. There are people I have in more than one list. If User1 is on ListA and ListB and I set List B to hide posts from my home timeline, what happens? Does User1 still appear in my timeline because they are in ListA?

#fedihelp

@KenWalkerQB

As far as I know they would be hidden.

@feditips I was wondering how to manage toots from groups just yesterday. This is perfect!
@feditips This only works through the web interface on your server I gather? Would be brilliant if applied to posts your software app of choice was gathering via the API as well rather than having to rely on software dev to implement filtering, lists etc

@dalereardon

I think it works on apps if they support Lists, but I don't know if they have the relevant settings available yet, so I'm suggesting people do the settings on the websites.

Also, the official apps don't support Lists at all yet, so it's only for people using certain third party apps anyway.

@feditips Wait? This is *new*. People were telling me about this feature months ago on pre-4.2.0 versions. I've even checked it out but did not use it.

@yourautisticlife

It was on the (unstable) release candidate which some servers installed a while ago. This is the first time the feature has been in a proper release version that is being installed widely.

Most servers don't install release candidates, they wait for the stable release version.
