I met the engineers whose sea drones were blocked when Starlink didn't function in September 2022, because Musk feared "World War Three." But they tried the same attack again a month later, and they hit several targets in Sebastopol.

World War Three did not break out.

Elon Musk Let Russia Scare Him

The billionaire isn’t the only one who’s been frightened into holding back help for Ukraine.

The Atlantic
Musk was deterred by Russian propaganda. So are many others. But the Russians respect strength - they will pull back, recalibrate when they meet resistance. Weakness propels them forward.
Russian ships stayed in port for several weeks after the Sebastopol attack. This was a good outcome. Maybe fewer people died.
@anneapplebaum I am sure there must be some money involved... russian money in some of his disastrous investments
@alexandre_cunha @anneapplebaum It's purely a coincidence that the IGOR anti-fraud system was only introduced after Elon left PayPal.
@anneapplebaum The point as well is that Musk has no business deciding to block or not to block communications. It's a fundamentally undemocratic way to decide the outcome of a war to get a billionaire with no legitimacy to make these decisions and have no check to his power, even if he were a well informed person, not a victim to Russian propaganda.
@anneapplebaum I mean how many times does Russia threaten to blow up the world when something doesn't go their way?
Fucking childish.....

@anneapplebaum it's beside the point, but I still don't think that making any war machinery dependent on being connected to the internet is a good idea

All that did was enable one dude to personally interfere

@anneapplebaum Seems like Ukraine figured out that trusting Elon Musk with their data was foolish. Anything US journalists might take away from that?
@anneapplebaum he wasn't afraid. He was being a narcissistic prick.
@anneapplebaum I think all of the billionaires in the Billionaires Boys Club think alike, are the enemies of democracy, and need to have their wealth trimmed, their businesses nationalized, and their lying selves inside courtrooms explaining why they aren't traitors or engaging in sedition. Enough is enough. Playing with our military like it is Elon's toy is beyond the pale. How is this anti-American pal of Putin's a defense contractor? The Senate is not doing its job. Ever.
@anneapplebaum Musk is definitely a national security threat. Maybe someone who thinks he can set his own foreign policy should not be allowed to have leverage over the U.S. government
@anneapplebaum if a military contractor did this crap to Britain while we were arming them, FDR would have crushed them.
@anneapplebaum He's intelligent in a narrow way & quite probably a psych/sociopath. Seems safe to say he's narcissistic & ignorant outside his wheelhouse. Incidentally, it's Sevastopol', stress on the penultimate vowel. Hope he pulls his head out & wipes out his eyes.

@anneapplebaum

Of course, Musk had no real fear of WW3. He simply wanted to tip the scales in Putin’s favor and (wrongly) believed that a peace activism narrative would give him sufficient cover. Next level genius, this one.

@anneapplebaum
Oh please!

How do you become certain that Elon was frightened?

Surely not because he said so - taking him at his word would appear ... well vastly overly generous.

Though if you show hard evidence that there was no deal going with Russia then perhaps Elon's claim might be of some use in determining his motivations.

I know negatives are hard to prove.
But no harder than believing self-serving claims by anti-Semitic, divisiveness promoting, billionaires.
#Ukraine

@anneapplebaum Why should we take Musk's words at face value? He won't admit that he works for the Kremlin, of course. Top-level career criminals rarely plead guilty.

He wants to present himself as some kind of sell-appointed peacekeeper, but his actions tell otherwise. Musk gave Ukraine Starlink "for free". Then he attempted extortion. Now Starlink is causing all kinds of trouble for the AFU. He doesn't look scared, he looks like a grifter who thinks himself smarter than everyone else.

@anneapplebaum Musk is a lying liar who will say whatever he thinks will fly to get the power that he really wants.
@anneapplebaum He does not get to dictate what some can and can't do with their technology. He has now interfered with a foreign nation at war.

@anneapplebaum

Elon is a onnoxious child with way too much money. His momma needs to spank his bottom.

@anneapplebaum
No. He wants to be important. " I can save the day"
Elon is a dangerous narcissist asshole who needs to go away

@anneapplebaum

Musk feared that Putin would order his assassination more than he feared WWIII.
He only cares about his own hide. Nobody else’s.

@anneapplebaum So Musk is a private citizen directly interfering with U.S. foreign policy. That's a serious crime. It doesn't matter why he did it. Why is he not prosecuted? Rich guy privilege, maybe?

@anneapplebaum

I don't think fear or ethics factored into it for Musk. Somehow money did.

@anneapplebaum Elon Musk does not understand bullies
@anneapplebaum I would gladly take a long holiday to help those engineers further develop their sea drones.
@anneapplebaum be careful not to confuse space Karen with facts.

@anneapplebaum

Musk is full of shit. He's a shitty liar too.
