Your Twitter/X account is a microphone connected to a mixer controlled by a fascist. You can speak all you want. The fascist controls your volume and can mute you whenever he wants. And you might not even know you’ve been muted because you can still hear yourself in your headphones.

It’s not called resistance when your volume knob is in someone else’s hand.

#twitter #x #algorithmicTimeline #elonMusk #fascism

@aral True, but whether that's sufficient reason to completely abandon football twitter (for example) to the fascists is still perhaps moot.
@aral when you're still on Twitter/X you are a fascist enabler... generating traffic and money.

@aral I spent six months trying to get my old Twitter account (since 2010) suspended.

What finally got me suspended was saying "Death to all fascists."

Elon doesn't like it when you disparage his core demographic.

@angiebaby @aral Hmm. Doesn't really seem consistent to me that you can't block people but you can still be banned. Weird flex elon.
@SOB2 @angiebaby @aral
Suddenly resisting the urge to make a Twitter account just to literally shit post pictures of my own shit to see how long it takes them to ban me...
@angiebaby @aral impossible to know whether this is just a power grab to promote their new ocean of piss streaming service

@angiebaby @aral

I got banned from Twitter for saying of Empty Greene,

"The problem with MTG is for as much as she shoots her mouth off, she never shoots her mouth off."

They really are some snowflakes.

@obscurestar @angiebaby @aral yeah.... righ wingers and "free speech" .. my as.... rofl ;)

@aral Ah ah perfect 😅

I like this other analogy : it's like playing chess with a pigeon, there's always a moment when the pigeon gets angry, makes the pieces fly, shits on the chessboard and triumphantly flies away.

Don't even start the game, you'll never win.

@aral The problem: There is no more open microphone heard by most of the free world.

The possible alternatives are either explicitly made not to be heard widely like the #fediverse or clones of twitter with the same problems all over again.

@exception Leaving the problematic framing of the “free world” to one side, I can tell you from my experience that engagement on the fediverse is far higher than it ever was for me on Twitter. Is it the best platform if you want to broadcast to millions of people? No. Is that necessary for a healthy democracy? No. I’d argue we need quite the opposite: smaller, more meaningful, and, essentially, factual communication.
@aral It is very much necessary to reach people who won't engage and even people who don't want to be reached with political messages. This is because disinterested and badly informed people are a majority of voters, and thereby determine the course of any democratic country. In the physical world it's the freedom to distribute leaflets, put up posters in public and make oneself heard with protests. Such low-cost political messaging is needed in the digital world, too.
@aral I don't like it, but the idea that most people engage with democracy of their own will is an elitist pipedream.

@exception exactly.

We might get a TON of engagement within our echo chambers. The amount of head-nodding might give a perception that we’re doing a lot of good.

But just engaging with people whose minds are already on the same page does nothing to progress anything.

@aral

@volkris @aral Even if all opinions were part of the engagement, that is still not enough.

We need to reach, inform and convince almost all people about the democratic process and the different opinions.

Most people aren't stupid at all, but they have other things from work to caring for children and the elderly to do and want to enjoy life, too. But they need to be reached and somewhat informed for democracy to work.

@exception @aral Twitter was never "heard by most of the free world".

The vast majority of people were never on Twitter.

@ClintonAnderson @aral True. But at least where I live, all the journalists were on Twitter and tweets were regularly cited in news or lead to articles.
@aral whilst I agree with your sentiments, we need to take action. Ask all those bodies you are connected with to transfer from Xitter to the fediverse. And keep doing it, and explaining why.

@aral
Something noticed about #Twitter lately, when I go on there (first mistake) and look at the feed, not only is it even more overwhelmingly negative than it was before #Elon, but If you search for one of these issues wear that far right fringe is strongly against everyone else, like looking up #Ukraine or the #ADL, the feed is completely dominated by these fringe viewpoints by far right / #neoNazi accounts.

Somehow, he's managed to get the #algorithm to really push these fringe ideas, overwhelming the mainstream on things that aren't actually hotly debated or even #controversial.

@Raccoon The somehow is the simplest part: he owns and controls the algorithm.
@aral true. but what does this say about the people who - besides that the fediverse isn't perfect - don't want to change, because "but my reach!"?
@aral and: when elron ist at the mixer at the birxsite, what about here?
@aral Resistance. Rheostat. Volume knob. Just sayin'. If it IS resistance, you are the one being resisted. :)
@aral some folk might quite like to have their knob in someone else’s hand …
@aral If there's anyone in Corporate America that is more hated than Elon Musk by the government, do tell. Otherwise, this by definition makes Elon the opposite of a fascist.

@dasboomer You have a very twisted idea of what is and is not a fascist.

Fascism - Corporatism, Nationalism, Autarky | Britannica

Fascism - Corporatism, Nationalism, Autarky: There were a few, usually small, fascist movements whose social and economic goals were left or left-centrist. Hendrik de Man in Belgium and Marcel Déat in France, both former socialists, were among those who hoped eventually to achieve a fairer distribution of wealth by appealing to fascist nationalism and class conciliation. In Poland the Camp of National Radicalism (Oboz Narodowo-Raykalny) supported land reform and the nationalization of industry, and fascists in Libya and Syria advocated Arab socialism. In Japan, Kita Ikki, an early theorist of Japanese fascism, called for the nationalization of large industries, a limited degree of worker control,

@dasboomer @aral they hate him so much they keep giving him billion dollar grants

wish someone would hate me like that :-(

@aral

Elon doesnt deliver messages that nazis don't like.

Your followers aren't getting your 'tweets'

If you 'tweet' to your 654 followers 7 will see it, because they "interact with you."

You can't ask your followers if they have seen your tweets, because the question isn't delivered.

F'Elon is a standard issue nazi subversive.

@aral

In Turkey recently, the dictator removed building standards, saying he was a good dictator making cheap buildings. Earthquakes knocked all the no standards buildings down, killing Turks.

Erdogan was not being returned to office, so he made Deep fake videos showing the democratic opposition chanting "terrorist slogans"

And Elon kept any opposition to the lies off of twitter, not a single denial.

Your tweets are not delivered.

You ARE NOT getting good done 'despite' Elon.

its xittter

@kevinrns @aral Huh, so Elon is secretly suppressing the speech of others, then? It's no surprise, but it means that I'll never undertand why people like him for that. It's honestly sad how much he, and culture warriors in general, are insincere about free expression. They expect others to tolerate their bigotry, but then fire off at people expressing actually important issues like queer rights and police brutality. They do not actually care about creating real discussion at all, which is what free expression was supposed to do.

@limepeep @aral

Its the most freeing thing that happens, the abject hypocrisy is nothing; there are no reasons.

Republicans no longer have reasons, they have excuses. You cannot argue with an excuse, it contains no logic, or rational system, nothing implied.

Abortion is an excuse, it has nothing to do with children or babies, its the criminalization of women.

There are no reasons, it's excuses.

@limepeep @aral

"Elon Musk Didn’t Just Do Turkey’s Bidding. Censoring for Strongmen Is Now a Pattern."

Elon paid 44 $Billion making a weapon to use on America. Even practiced. Now he is suing the ADL - lol 👉 for ruining xitter!

Free speech—unless a country doesn’t really do free speech.

@aral media in China works this way. The resistance uses code words. It's a cat and mouse game but there is resistance.
@aral yes of course, but also a volume potentiometer technically is a resistor
@aral Yes, plus the environment is really nasty, aggressive. Not welcoming.
@aral and that #editorializing of your voice is not even regulated.
@aral ok, this is a good argument to get rid Twitter account

@aral

"Have you ever wondered how good was so easily destroyed by evil in the past?

And thought to yourselves how ignorant and unaware those people must have been?

Well, look around.

Because the past is upon you."
SearingTruth

@aral Actually it is, because that's how pretty much all volume knobs are implemented. Either it's a real-world potentiometer, or it's a simulated one driven by a rotary encoder.

The "resistance" in this case is their tolerance of your gain. 🙂

@aral I go on there to mostly block his advertisers .
And any Nazis who cross my path.
I blocked him more than six months ago .
It’s a great place to CosPlay Nova Express
@aral Okay but that's why I've taken my mic off and left it in the junk drawer in the garage. I don't have to throw it away too be done with it!
