I think this model has gotten far enough to upload the traditional obscure first WIP image. #LightWave3D #3DArt
I started off using Kier Darby's old White Star tutorial and his model as reference, and then began adjusting the spline cage. One big thing I wanted to improve on from the original TV model was how the different sub-assemblies fit into each other. On the left is the way it was on the show (by way of Kier's model), on the right is my version, where I blend the lower nose into the lower hull/undercarriage/girdle. #LightWave3D #3DArt #Babylon5 #WhiteStar

New WIP renders of my White Star model. The modeling of the main shapes is done, but there's still a lot of detailing that needs to be added, including all the weapons and mechanical parts, the fighter bay, bridge interior, and painted texture maps.

Updates on the White Star, with glowing yellow areas, engine vanes, and landing gear added.

Mastodon ate my last update, so, doubling up. I finished the weapons and sensors on the wings and nose, and have started working on a low-res bridge interior, beginning with the season 3 version of the set. #LightWave3D #3DArt #Babylon5 #WhiteStar
Since my last update, I finished the season 3 version of the White Star bridge (in all its forms), have been plugging away on the season 4/5 version, and took a quick break to construct the bridge for the Blue Star and resurface Nadab Göksu & William Johansson's model of that ship for PBR after stitching the bridge into it. #LightWave3D #3DArt #Babylon5 #WhiteStar
I've updated my blog post on the "celtic knot" insignia used on different White Stars with illustrated recreations (suitable for avatars). I've also finished the production version of the bridge, and will be moving on to doing the variants seen in seasons 4 and 5. https://www.gian-cursio.net/2023/09/white-star-insignia/ #LightWave3D #3DArt #Babylon5 #WhiteStar
Tech the Tech: White Star Insignia

Revised August 10, 2024 with corrected insignia accounting (I initially thought A and E were the same one) and illustrations of each design. While the White Star was introduced in the third season …

And after an unjustified amount of work, I've finished cataloging and making the variations of the White Star bridge set. https://www.gian-cursio.net/2024/09/white-star-bridges/

Tech the Tech: The Ships of the White Star Fleet

I’ve been working on a model of the White Star from Babylon 5, and have gone down the rabbit hole of cataloging and recreating the sets (at least, the one that’s visible through the shi…

Texturing!

My goal is to match the original model at SD resolution, but with subtle additions that become visible in a close-up or at high resolution.

I've built an upscaled version of the base purple wave texture, and created blue, red, and green variations, which I'm mixing together in Lightwave procedurally to create subtle splashes of color, along with gold flecks.

The lines and arcs are being painted in a separate image that I'm using as a mask.

Made some (subtle) progress on my #WhiteStar recently. At first I freehanded the "contouring,” but I wasn't satisfied. I got enough of a handle on Photoshop's vector tools. In addition to getting nice smooth arcs, it's also easy to tweak. My model has some shape differences from the original, so exactly rebuilding the original maps wouldn't work.

I also turned sub-surface scattering back on. It's murder on render times, but I love how it looks on the tail.

Major texturing for the #WhiteStar is finished. Check out that subsurface scattering on the aft fins in the last render!

Now it’s back to Modeler for a landing bay, meditation room, tiny crew, and I want to add some more greebles to the mechanical sections, they look a little plain. #LightWave3D #3DArt #Babylon5

Did some revisions of the contouring texture on the undercarriage. I think I've got it set. #WhiteStar #LightWave3D #3DArt #Babylon5

I revisited the details on the "tech" section in the nose, researching greebles used on digital and physical models and finding some I liked.

I also built the meditation room seen in The Road Home. Concept art shows it was meant to be a straight cylinder, but from what we actually saw in the movie, it makes sense as a triangle.

Next up, the boarding tube at the bottom of the ship. #WhiteStar #LightWave3D #3DArt #Babylon5

I finished the boarding tube and landing gear seen in WWE, and added a couple of foot-ramps. The ramps are designed so that they can lower in either direction, forward or aft, and they operate independently.

I added some bronze and silver accents to various tech details to break up the coloration subtly, as well as scorched metal effects to the cannons.

@davidcgc wow, I had no idea. Never noticed these before.
@davidcgc Beautiful work! So cool!
@davidcgc I still say it (White Star ship) looks like a plucked chicken #B5Forever love those Celtic knot designs, especially the triangular ones
