In 2016 Russia financed a series of ads along with an army of upvote bots. The intent was to divide america further from all angles

The senate intelligence committee released the following ads from Russia linked actors

These are from accounts with names like Blacktivists, Back the Badge, Secure Borders, Army of Jesus and so on. Every division covered

We’re heading into 2024. If you see a political ad trying to provoke you: mistrust it.

@flexghost that's some creepy stuff right there
@flexghost Reading these all together, they sound more “right” when read with a Russian accent

@flexghost and we're going to see them for sure as social media services have stopped even trying to moderate this at all. Led by Elon Musk at Twitter, but also Facebook has stopped trying to remove misinformation. And now AI generated misinformation.

I expect the worst.

@dangrsmind most of us are not on Twitter / X anymore. But the media still is. They will report anything posted on there with a small retraction later after they discover it is disinformation.

Instant legitimacy for evil people.

@flexghost

This is also the biggest threat to losing the election.

He lost in 2020. There is no way voters now have a better impression of him.

BUT Putin has a more valid reason to help him than in 2016: destroying the funding for Ukraine.

The real Russian threat are it's hackers and troll farms.

I hope our national security apparatus isn't too compromised by Trump lackeys to deal with these threats.

@Hawkmoon great points. Unfortunately, our national security apparatus will not be able to remove these bad faith actors from private social media companies. They will act with impunity

@flexghost

They wouldn't have to remove them if they could publicly identify them.

They could have an official government website showing all troll farm content that they've identified.

There have to be countermeasures because this strategy is working all over Europe and the UK as well.

@flexghost

Thank you for your service 👍

@flexghost yes, and I’m also worried about the silicon techbros Thiel and Musk backing Vivek with bots and ai hypertargeted brainwashing - we might not see it from our vantage point
@flexghost I thought I blocked you you horrible disgusting hypocrite. I'll have to try again.

@flexghost as a general rule, do the opposite of what your TV tells you... the person attacked in the most advertisements is usually the better candidate with the most progressive/helpful policies.

It's why all of the GOP's ads have ominous music with a voiceover like "Did you know [candidate's name] supports [something objectively awesome]?"

@flexghost

Once again I ask:

why can’t we do the same but instead of spreading lies and disinformation, we spread truth and facts?

Why can’t somebody rent/buy/whatever the same bots, but then use it to spread names and information telling the truth and exposing disinformation?

Totally serious about this. Why?

@kbsez it doesn’t pay

@flexghost

Doesn’t pay??? Exposing susceptible people to truth using the same techniques enemies use to sell them lies?

I’ll bet you that 50,000 people donate immediately to finance this idea… I’d donate a lot to this cause because it’s been proven to work

@flexghost Fux news is also backed by the kremlin. Ditto; newsmax, onenews, etc.
@flexghost they spent 100k. Stop with the neomcarthyism. This is #blueanon nonsense, defending indefensible neoliberalism.
@flexghost pretending America's divisions are due to Russian influence is the stupidest form of conservatism. Did Putin make the Ferguson organizers all die?

@mattyroses

Found the dumbest take on the internet everyone!

1. Not true
2. If true then someone spending a certain amount to destroy democracy doesn’t make it OK.
>> He only bought three clips worth of ammo not six! The shooting wasn’t that bad!!
Duhhh
3. Blue anon? Typing is fun but maybe you should try reading first
4. These images are from the senate intelligence committee. Overall, Russia spent a vast some even though the sum does not matter.

This is More response than you deserve

🏆

@flexghost Lisa Simpson in your bio is right.

Quick question, how much was spent on the 2016 election by non-Russian actors, my little conspiracy theorist?

@mattyroses nevermind

You’re not a serious person 😂😂😂

@flexghost the eternal cry of the shitlib. "You don't support invading Iraq - you're not SERIOUS!"

Good luck with your conspiracy theories while the fascists take over. You're going to need it.

@flexghost also, remember how they created seemingly innocuous profiles and sites or co-opted established ones early on, and then completely flipped the script just before certain events such as the midterms or Jan 6th? I sure af do.
Nothing is secure in this climate of bad faith allies, and mis/disinformation, being peddled and assisted by the zuck-muck fucks.
@axeshun so much bs happened that I forgot about that!
@flexghost that's exactly what they were counting on. They’ve practiced and developed for nearly 80 years, their anti-western psychological assault. No one should ever underestimate their expertise.
@flexghost Here's hoping all the lads in the troll & bot farms have been conscripted. 😏
@flexghost I wonder if we have retaliated at all. Do we use social media to broadcast into Russia things that Putin would never want the Russian public to see? Like the truth about the brutality of the Ukraine war? The amount of money Putin has amassed to himself? The voices of political dissenters?
@Meowthias can’t penetrate a country’s media when they have no freedom
@flexghost I get that they don't have freedom in the way that we do, but it seems like with our sophisticated intelligence services we might be able to give the Putin regime a taste of their own medicine. There are enough pissed off, Russian speaking Ukrainians to help us craft some messages Putin would really not want his people to see.
@flexghost I sometimes wonder too about stuff I see on Facebook from groups like Occupy Democrats or The Other 98% or similar pages. Some of the memes they post and that I see shared by fellow liberals/progressives almost seem like they are purposefully made to make us on the left seem like we have more extreme or more unreasonable positions than we actually do. Like to drive division and make it harder for nonTrumpy center/right people to be able to vote with us to defeat MAGA.

@saren I can actually answer that. Back when I was on Twitter I had and was a member of DM groups. Some had official democrat organizers asking people (medium and large accounts) to disseminate talking points from their agenda. Then smaller accounts would see the larger accounts talking about a topic and submit their tweets/messages to the DM group for others to repost / retweet

Instant echo chamber with very few people at the helm.

@flexghost this post makes my assumptions feel vindicated.

Never has a greater weapon been more freely available than the power of misinformation.
This is one such weapon that is not prohibited by the Geneva convention and all countries are free to participate.

Be Skeptical. Trust yourself, not an algorithm.

@flexghost
Excellent reminder. Thank you.
@flexghost also, don't argue with trolls or shitposters, their job is to waste your time.
@flexghost wouldn’t “block all ads” be easier advice to act on?
