“I used to think the top environmental problems were biodiversity loss, ecosystem collapse, and climate change. I thought that with 30 years of good science we could address those problems. But I was wrong. The top environmental problems are selfishness, greed, and apathy … and to deal with those we need a spiritual and cultural transformation - and we scientists don’t know how to do that.”

Gus Speth, UNDP Administrator, 1993-1999

@Jeggers @Brendanjones

I love this quote. I read somewhere that Gus himself said he didn’t say it, but wishes he had.

@Jeggers

Have you learned about the #LandBack movement? It addresses all those problems.

@Jeggers

This quote has stuck with me for over 20 years now.

I thought I could fix things as an engineer, and realized how futile it was. I am now in science communication and if I can do anything about it, I would like to teach the next generation of scientists to communicate in ways that can at least affect these issues.

Thanks for posting this. The motivation I needed to finish get this dissertation done.

@Jeggers bingo. I've got a project to try helping with anti-apathy and CTAs
@Jeggers you are right. Change of mindset is needed. Or the result will be that young people disconnect from society. Poor people in England for instance. They greedy elites are failing.
