Going back to the former Twitter these days feels a little like going back to your old high school once you've graduated; everything is familiar but it's not your place anymore, and you don't necessarily want to spend more time there than you have to.

This is not to disparage people who are still using it as their primary social media outlet (I still post career news/updates there). But I am glad it's no longer the focus of my social media life. There are other places to be.

Like here! Hello!

@scalzi Definitely enjoy seeing your posts again!!

I left X, formerly Twitter, a few years ago and you were one of the voices I missed.

But my mental health has improved since I jumped off X and FB those five years ago.

@scalzi Howdy from middle-of-nowhere Texas!
@scalzi And we're so happy to have you here!

@scalzi There are so many people whose thoughts I really appreciate who either haven't left Twitter yet, or have gone over to Bluesky or Threads.

It sucks that I won't be able to read and interact with those people anymore, but I'm slowly building up a new network here on Mastodon.

So yeah, I look back at Twitter with a mix of nostalgia and grief.

@RinguPingu @scalzi apparently Threads are based on ActivityPub, thus maybe they will integrate someday...

BlueSky has its own "distributed-protocol", but maybe some day, they also will integrate - or Mastodon engine "evolve" into that.

@dominjaniec @scalzi from what I know, one of the main differences between ActivityPub and the Bluesky protocol is that Bluesky uses indexers to serve content algorithmically. I'd have some serious qualms if Mastodon switched to working like that.

@scalzi Good metaphor!

I feel the same way about TwitteX.

@scalzi it has been years since I've felt welcome there. Long before Musk took over. Here feels more like how I remember Twitter I loved.

@scalzi I miss a lot of the people and connections I made over on what has become Musk's Folly. Glad to be making new friends here (as well as seeing old, familiar folks such as yourself).

🍻

@scalzi Probably we all like it here, and it's so nice to have you here as well.
@scalzi
Twitter/x is indeed like my old high school, but they let it run down a bit, sometimes the pipes leak or the power goes out, and the skeezy guys seem more plentiful, or at least, the teachers have given up trying to reign them in. I no longer have any reason to visit much, and don't feel comfortable sending my kids there.
@scalzi 100% I love that analogy. Familiar but you're past it. No desire to return.
@scalzi hi. My thoughts exactly. I’m so happy I have other social media places to be.
@scalzi And very glad you’re here!

@scalzi i know the feeling.

and i’m still sad i lost the ability to see what some folks who are still there (or left for other spaces) do. but the recognition that it’s not a good space and it used to be central enough that it was hard to think of it as something to give up does hit a certain way. even if it’s much worse now than it was back then, the sort of badness isn’t new.

@scalzi πŸ‘‹ β€œHi!” from β€˜here’.
@scalzi having them take away Tweetdeck and then only able to see a post by @georgetakei if I subscribe to Twitter plus ? Hell no. Less and less of the Twitter carcass for me.
@scalzi So glad you are here. It’s such a nice friendly environment and I love to hear your updates (especially from #Ohio)
@scalzi feel this in my bones. πŸ˜…
@scalzi Weird to go back and see friends still there... "didn't you graduate?"

@scalzi
Here's the thing-- Nostalgia is born from the realization the past exists only as memoryπŸ€” ☠️

And I miss it less and less.

@clintruin @scalzi it looks like he's actually trying to remove the block feature.
@songofsaturn @scalzi
Yep, that's right.
 πŸ€¦β€β™‚️
@scalzi it's also like going back and seeing that the old high school has turned into a weird cult church...
@scalzi
And hopefully soon like going back to my old high school, which no longer exists.

@scalzi Hello!

I hope more people abandon it/kick the habit after this latest move to eliminate "Block" functionality

@scalzi If I could get some of my institutional follows to migrate I’d likely not go back at all…
@scalzi Dead on, although it’s WAY less mature than high school.

@scalzi I just wish more people made the switch to here.

As always, it doesn't matter if it's better or not, just how money can be made out of something.

Thing is, with social sites and apps, one can't choose what one really wants if one wants to reach as much people as possible. Is not like an email client or a software. You have to choose the more popular option πŸ˜•

I do hope Mastodon continues to grow!

@scalzi My timeline here is already growing more lively with the continued exodus from xitter. I appreciate this 😁
@scalzi Are you posting to each social media site individually or do you use social management software to post to all of them at once? That seems like it would be hard to track.

@scalzi I enjoyed today’s jazz-band-vs-influencer thread so much, and the thought has occurred to me that I should now close my Twitter acount and end my 14 years there on a high note.

RS Archer on X

Our gardener has just been asked to stop walking around in our garden because he is, and I quote, "Spoiling the shot" This from a woman who is filming a video segment where she is standing at my gates claiming she is holidaying at her "summer house" My house !!!

Twitter
@scalzi hi! Unlike Twitter, my high school is not a flaming digital heap. But you have a point; it's better here.
@scalzi Hello back! It's good to see your posts over here.
@scalzi
If Elmo carries through on removing the block function ....
All of my remaining friends are leaving....
I left a long time ago...

@scalzi I drastically dropped my engagement there months ago. Once they did the X switch, I stopped entirely. I find I don't actually miss it much. About the only thing I haven't really found here is the instant, broad news/current-events flow. But TBH, so much of that was either repetitive or just people yelling a lot that it wasn't all that informational.

I can't say I've found a real community here yet, but I didn't have much of one at the other place, either. Haven't had that since LJ.

@scalzi It's a weird feeling, for sure. My community isn't on Twitter anymore... but they aren't here either. I don't want to join Bluesky or Threads because Zuck and Jack are just as dangerous as Elon. Social media, as a whole, feels like a liminal space right now. It's very lonely, if I'm being honest.

@scalzi I'm new from Twitter. Been judged too much and had my past used against me (like from 5+ years ago) and treated like I do not deserve help as a #pwd on (what ppl in Ontario Canada call) #ODSPoverty.

Just trying this out and hopefully have a better chance to be supported rather than judged and treated like shit for my past, cuz I don't live there anymore.

U were also my first follower on here, and trying to find others on Twitter that I follow and r somewhat kind to me.

@scalzi: If people who never graduated high school kept haunting it.
@scalzi I actually went back on Twitter for the first time in a few months to find a tweet you'd made, and it immediately asked me to subscribe to Premium for the chance to receive free money. Glad you're also on here.
@mooseblaster I don't want his money, and I don't wish to give him mine.
@scalzi
Before I finally deactivated my account, I would look at what was trending, and of course, it was the usual MAGA bullsh#t. That was the moment I realized it wasn't the place for me anymore.

@scalzi Their algo is now all out of whack. People paying for Blue Checks now get their content prioritized regardless of relevance to a post or topic, so viewing replies on a popular tweet/account/hashtag is so cringe.

I find it much more difficult now to find content I'm interested in because it's prioritizing (essentially) "Paid Content".

A vapid husk of the site it used to be, for sure.

@scalzi It's not my primary place but there are maybe a dozen folks over there that aren't active here that I don't want to lose contact with.
@scalzi I just saw that Musky got rid of the ability to block users. Every day or two I see another development that makes me glad I've left X behind for good.
@scalzi hello! May we all prosper much better here.
@scalzi I only go back to look at cat accounts that haven't moved here.
@scalzi What is frustrating is did not have to be this way.

@scalzi

TBH, when I joined Twitter, I felt like I had walked into somebody else's high school where all the cliques had their backs turned and I couldn't find a spot at a lunch table. It never got any better, so I left and have only been glad πŸ˜ƒ
