it's cute when websites think I would turn off my ad blocker rather than just leaving the page
@retr0id Or use an anti-anti-adblock like Nano Defender.
@retr0id i spend time to report the site and still use another one instead

@retr0id

I've recently seen a grey square with the text "please rotate your phone to landscape in order to view this ad".

🤣

They must think we browse the Internet hoping for ads

@crashglasshouses

@EricLawton @retr0id @crashglasshouses There must have been a mound of cocaine with a face-shaped indent on the desk of whomever dreamt that up. It is *that* wack.
@retr0id does anyone do that I wonder?
@retr0id
I always let them keep their secrets.

@retr0id The harder you try to stop me from adblocking the more annoyed I get.

Fixing the adblocker is my first choice rather than leaving. I haven't had to go to the extreme of "shove the entire browser in a VM that I access over VNC, then blit a black rectangle over the would-be ad", but I will always win.

Just a question of how annoyed I get.

@azonenberg @retr0id You too huh? I have gone to silly extremes since 1999 when I wrote my own (Ad Extinguisher.)
@azonenberg @retr0id Your black rectangle thing is actually a good idea for an "ultimate solution" adblocker to deal with aggressive countermeasures.
@[email protected] i just turn off their adblocker warning with my adblocker

@limepot @retr0id Yes!

Nice unrandomized name that element has... Would be a shame if someone blocked it.

@retr0id Or get whomped with a "sign up for our newsletter!" pop up before you can even see their content -- AND a warning from the browser that they want to send you notifications and know your location.

@MylesRyden @retr0id Ugh the location ask.

Hey news sites, you aren't sending me a paper anymore, you don't need my address.

@[email protected] I only turn off my ad blocker for a select few websites.
For instance, there's a graphing calculator forum I used to inhabit that would put a few very small ad boxes in like search results or something. That's the one site with ads that I've turned my ad blocker off for
And what's great is that I didn't even know it had ads until someone mentioned it in one of the chats. No annoying popups whatsoever

@retr0id There is a shitload of cuteness on the bloatwebs 🙄

One browser to surf them all,
one browser to search them,
One browser to track them all
and in the Google bind them

@retr0id Same here. But I suppose they don't care. The site does not exist in order to give you information. It only exists to sell you ads. If you won't view ads, it's best for _them_ if you leave.
@retr0id If I had a cent each time I quit YouTube instead of letting their damn ads play, I wouldn't need to work for a full month.
@retr0id
cc: Every website, everywhere, all at once.
@retr0id or accepting all kinds of tracking and advertisement cookies
@retr0id It's adorbs. "Bye-eee." 👋
@retr0id especially for some ai written clickbait bs 😉
@retr0id yeah, or set up a rule to block the overlay :D
@retr0id or blocking the ad blocker warning pop -up modal...
@retr0id the hilarious thing is most of the time you can tell them that you have and just continue and they believe you
@retr0id Yep, exactly what I do as well.
@retr0id This would also apply to the Chrome browser, if I didn't already use Firefox because I don't trust Google.

@retr0id

Right? Like your content is unique?

@retr0id Similarly, if I can't mute a mobile game's ads, I'm force-quitting it.
@retr0id, no anti-adblocker warnings, nor Cookieconsent pop-ups in the inbuild ad/trackerblocker in the Vivaldi browser, with the added filters I use 😎
@retr0id indeed. And it takes less time to find an alternative site than scrolling past and dismissing all of their stupid advertising.
@retr0id There's a flip side to that. Many smaller sites are absolutely reliant on ad revenue, and that includes my site.
I make huge amounts of really good information available, so there is real value in visiting my site.
Are you 1 of those people who only ever take, and never give in return? If so, I feel sorry for you.
@WilliamNB You're talking to me via a fedi instance that I self-host, out of pocket.

If you'd like to find out some of the other things I give the internet community, maybe check out my blog (also self-hosted), or open-source software contributions.
@WilliamNB Ethical advertising and alternative funding models can exist, but we could discuss that without the ad hominems.
@retr0id @WilliamNB To be fair, there is a tendency for adblocker users to behave as if they are *entitled* to ad-free content, and to whine when they can't get it. @WilliamNB's toot was sanctimonious but the underlying issue, which is that using an adblocker is essentially freeloading, is hard to dismiss. You might not be happy with the quid pro quo of ad-supported content as it stands, but that does not entitle you to use an adblocker.
@theohonohan @WilliamNB I agree that I am not entitled to consume ad-free content, which is precisely why I leave the page, as described in the OP.
@retr0id @WilliamNB but you only do that when confronted with anti-adblocker measures. Sounds more like you are not prepared to endure ad-supported content, even in that scenario.
@WilliamNB @retr0id No I’m not, I definitely give in life. But not my web surfing data to every website that wants to scrap it because they think that’s a good business model.
@WilliamNB btw, that banner on your site is unscrollable on mobile, so it’s only possible see parts of it on a smaller phone
@LambdaDuck Thanks for telling me. Will go see what I can do to fix that.
@[email protected] alternatively you can get your ad blocker to block the element asking you to turn off your ad blocker

@retr0id Websites: "Please allow our ads!"

The ads:

@retr0id even more so when I'm not running an ad blocker, just an information stealing blocker. I'd stay on the page if they were willing to show me ads without stealing my info to do it.

@retr0id It's also cute when websites ask me to turn off my ad blocker and I don't have one.

Should I install one just for accessing their page?

@retr0id I've done it... once. The blog is worth reading, and they use a *very* unusual ad platform that doesn't act sketchy like the rest.

Otherwise though... "BYEEEEEE"

@tim_lavoie I think I know which blog you're referring to, heh
@retr0id Maybe!
But in case not, it's @cadey's, https://xeiaso.net/.
Xe Iaso

Xe Iaso's personal website.

@retr0id wait until chromes new DRM for the web takes over everything and every ad supported site says "use chrome or die"

https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2023/07/googles-web-integrity-api-sounds-like-drm-for-the-web/

Google’s nightmare “Web Integrity API” wants a DRM gatekeeper for the web

It's just a "proposal," but it's also being prototyped inside Chrome right now.

Ars Technica
@retr0id Yeah, when a website demands that I turn off “ad blockers,” then I automatically leave and find another site that respects users. “Ad blockers” don’t block ADS; they block PRIVACY INVADERS. Ad-supported media managed to stay highly profitable for more than a century during eras when production costs were higher, and when advertisers had more and wealthier competitors. So, media can include ads without invading privacy, but advertisers are lazy, greedy and less creative now.
@retr0id a local news site has a little text slightly readable link in the Adblocker Shaming popup that reads: I wish to continue without supporting this site. Yep, if the ads weren’t so damn obnoxious, I wouldn’t have to block them in the first place.
@retr0id
NOBODY'S there for the ads
@retr0id on fromoldbooks.org on some pages i display a fallback message mentioning that the site is supported by ads and donations, and saying how to donate :)
@retr0id Mmm, it's like sites that tell me they may not work correctly it I "refuse all" on their cookie options. From my POV they work fine though I accept that they are probably not getting the " correct" data about me that they hoped for.

@retr0id I have to use the reload control A control C (switch to Word) control V trick to grab news articles a LOT now.

A few sites have even wised up and stopped sending down the whole article.

@retr0id Ah yes, let me turn off my adblocker so I can play Where's Waldo looking for the content, fry my brain with an overdose of visual nonsense and goatse my computer.
@retr0id indeed. I have all the time in the world to un-tick those cookies things and beyond
