Patch submitted to the #Linux kernel by a four-year-old girl🤠
@nixCraft the what?
@hacknorris @nixCraft
The final "s" in "parameters" did not have a dash under it, so she put in a patch that added one more dash.
@riderexmachina i know but anyway… 4 year old knows how to read…
@hacknorris
My brother could read at 2. It's not common, but it happens
@riderexmachina @hacknorris
My kindergarten teachers were annoyed with my mother because I could already read when I got there.
@hacknorris @riderexmachina
I reckon you do not need to be able to read to notice this.
@Zekovski @riderexmachina she literally said that "s" letter is sad, so well…
@hacknorris @riderexmachina
You can know the alphabet letters even though you can't read.
@Zekovski @hacknorris @riderexmachina Looks like she's already getting an early education in "well-actually" unfortunately
@Zekovski @hacknorris @riderexmachina I was reading by age 2y6mo. Some of us start early.
@hacknorris @Zekovski @riderexmachina I'm pretty sure the content in square brackets was added by the aunt for clarity, indicating that the child didn't necessarily know it was an "s"
@hacknorris @riderexmachina My sister was reading at 3. It's rare, but kids can read that young.
@hacknorris @riderexmachina I don't remember how old I was when I learned, but the first day of school I could read perfectly. However, you don't have to be able to read to note that a letter isn't underlined
@nixCraft will she be attending the CRB to discuss this?
Documentation: fix formatting to make 's' happy - kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git - Linux kernel source tree

@hmhackmaster @nixCraft thank you, this makes the change so much clearer

@hmhackmaster Judging from the dates this four year old contributor is now a teenager, or will be by the end of the year if she's not already. I wonder if she's expressed any further interest in tech!

/ @nixCraft

@thorybo Oh dang you make a good point! I read the date but totally didn’t do the math, I wonder what’s up with them…

@nixCraft

@nixCraft

If she ever get into programming this would make for an awesome resume line 😂

#linux

@levpetrovitch @nixCraft "had first patch accepted to the Linux kernel at the age of 4"?

@Zugschlus

Something like that, yes.

@nixCraft

@levpetrovitch @Zugschlus @nixCraft Excellent! I would be proud to have that on my resume. At any age!
@levpetrovitch @nixCraft when you can say, at age 18, that you have 14 years experience of kernal development....

@Spuds @levpetrovitch @nixCraft

Yeah, she's not gonna have a problem with "this is an entry-level position that requires 10 years experience with a product that was only release 2 years ago."

@nixCraft Most wholesome commit I've seen in a while
@nixCraft now I feel talentless and underskilled.
@kkarhan @nixCraft same, I now also want to patch something in the kernel!
@nixCraft now that is proper “open” source, well done.
@nixCraft Alt text says "help from her aunt". Tero Roponen is more likely her uncle. Nevertheless, well done Maisa!
@nixCraft Now she‘s part of the Linux project – how many people can claim that 😸
@nixCraft this is so cute 🥹
@nixCraft
Ce qui est de loin la plus belle histoire que j'aurai lue aujourd'hui. :-)

@fhouste @nixCraft C’était il y a bientôt 9 ans, mais c’est adorable ! 😍

It was almost 9 years ago, but it’s adorable! 😍

@nixCraft Thank you for highlighting my failures as a father to 4 and 5 year old girls 😀
@nixCraft Twenty years later, Maisa writes the patch that prevents the Singularity
@adhdeanasl @nixCraft She would be 13, now, since it was submitted in November 2014, almost 9 years ago.
@TritTriton @nixCraft Damn, that means the Singularity is only 11 years away
@nixCraft This is the magic of free and open source software that we in the FOSS community love to see.

Best #Linux kernel patch you will see in your life

@nixCraft

@nixCraft I especially love that Tero took the approach of "you can do this yourself" rather than "I'll do it for you"... Not that there's anything wrong with the latter, but it was an excellent opportunity to teach the lesson that #opensource is (or, should be) truly open for all sorts of people to contribute to, and I like that the opportunity did not go to waste.

@nixCraft

Bloody love it. Somebody send her a t-shirt; you’re never too young to start collecting nerdgear!

@nixCraft these are the people that are 24 and have 20 years of experience lol
@nixCraft I wish I was able to do that at that age...
