I wish I didn't have to tell you about this again, but I do. It's not being reported much in the news — and you know why?

Because it's not 'new' (the origin of the word 'news'), it's old. This has been going on for months now, and corporate news outlets are simply tired of reporting it. But it is still happening.

Canada's boreal forests are burning up.

At least 1100 fires are active, more than 700 out of control. Over 13 million hectares have been burned so far, with no end in sight. It's an unprecedented climate and environmental disaster.

An update from Alberta: Currently 87 fires burning, one out of control. There is so much red on the national map, I hope Alberta is releasing some firefighters to assist elsewhere.

@LALegault To your point about the North burning without much coverage, this is a pic from Northern Quebec a couple of days ago. @breadandcircuses @cynblogger
@breadandcircuses Yes, it’s enormous. Satellite view of the smoke:

@breadandcircuses for context compare that to 2020 when ALL of California had 4 million acres burned with the largest single fire being just over 1M acres.

@breadandcircuses Sheesh! I thought they would have put out these fires 🔥 in #Canada 🇨🇦 by now. Yeah, I am surprised this is not receiving more media attention.

#CanadaWildfires in Boreal Forest is becoming scorched earth. Long-term impact:

📍 reducing ability to capture & store world's carbon (currently at about 12%)
📍 destroying wetland, lakes, and North America's largest rivers
📍 obliterating nesting grounds for nearly half of the common bird species found in North America

@breadandcircuses For the climate scientists who told us this would happen for the last 10-30 y, this summer has been very painful.
@breadandcircuses Seeing as how Canada is the second largest country on the planet, I'm wondering if we should be expressing it as a percentage of the Earth's land mass, as in "so far this year 8% of the planet has burned" (not the real number).
@breadandcircuses Alberta has got this! The political mindset is on it. To offset: we now pay 25 cents for paper bags! Relief is in sight. Even more welfare for business. Win-Win.
@breadandcircuses In case anyone's wondering, 13M hectares is an area slightly bigger than Mississippi, almost as big as Louisiana. That's a lot of land lost to fire.
@Obdurodon @breadandcircuses it's 15.1 million hectares as of today (27 August 2023)
@ariadne @breadandcircuses So, for the USAns, bigger than Illinois and closing in on Georgia.
@breadandcircuses I personally see this reported non-stop on the news, but thanks for sharing regardless.
@breadandcircuses I'm beyond incensed that our Federal government is so utterly cowardly on the climate change file because they're so afraid of backlash from the Conflagration Party of Canada. Incremental administrative solutions and paper shuffling won't fix this. We bought a goddamned pipeline but can't transform our economy and lead the world in green transformation? Welp. Time is up.
@breadandcircuses
And the Canadian lumber companies say: All these fires could have been avoided if this damn Liberal government had given us permission to clearcut all the boreal forests. Well, there's hope for us, if Poilievre is elected PM in 2025. Then we'll clearcut all of Canada. 😪 😒 😬
@breadandcircuses ah, much better today (sarcasm)
