Because of @neatchee I've been thinking about live action adaptations of anime. I wanted to expand out and ask Urusei, what's a live action adaptation that you enjoyed? #Anime #VideoGames #Books
@FlyboyM @neatchee Illang: The Wolf Brigade, a Korean live-action adaptation of Jin-Roh (which I haven't seen, but from the trailer looks very similar in many aspects).
@FlyboyM the most recent live action adaptation I've watched and enjoyed is Qihun (based on Hikaru no Go)

It doesn't just adapt wholesale but it also localized the story to China

@FlyboyM @neatchee

There was a live-action 2-hour special of Ranma 1/2 that was fun.

I was trying to think of things where I've seen both. Alita Battle Angel, but I saw the anime a long time ago, so it would be hard to compare it. I thought the movie was generally good.

If you want a laugh, do a search for "live action better than anime", and you'll see articles on both sides of the question.
Some of the assertions made me laugh- "Live action doesn't need filler" <cough cough Lost>, "Live action relies less heavily on tropes and cliches"- people are used to the tropes in Western media, and don't discuss them or recognize them.

@FlyboyM @neatchee

Also, a lot of the anti-anime comments make it clear that people have only watched a couple shonen series.

@pkemner @FlyboyM "Doesn't require tropes" and "doesn't require filler" are hilariously naïve takes. The more I read the internet, the harder it becomes for me to take the average person's analysis and opinion seriously lol
@FlyboyM The Gintama and Rurouni Kenshin live action movies were good, but the one that really stands out to me until now is the Nodame Cantabile TV drama. Ueno Juri’s Nodame is so iconic that she’s going to reprise the role in a Nodame musical coming this October, but this time with a different Chiaki https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2023-03-21/juri-ueno-returns-as-nodame-for-nodame-cantabile-musical/.196231 The thing is, Tamaki Hiroshi’s Chiaki is equally iconic for me so it feels strange not having both of them back, but based on her birdsite account it seems like Ueno herself didn’t expect to play Nodame in 2023 😂 And Tamaki Hiroshi played Tacchan in the 2022 live action movie Way of the Househusband…

@FlyboyM Wotakoi's adaptation was great, to my memory.

I also enjoyed the very first Taiwanese adaptation of Hana Kimi but I admit that I also have eternal trash taste.
