It is despicable that the Covid vaccine manufacturers are going to charge more than $110/dose for the new XBB.1.5 boosters when available in mid-September.

The US government previously paid ~$25/dose, supplied free of charge, and subsidized these companies with untold $ billions.

@erictopol how much additional protection does it provide? If it goes from 99% to 99.1% then it's not a big deal in my opinion.

Edit:
I should have asked, what's the difference in effectiveness between between the 1.5 boosters compared to the other boosters?

@Sibshops @erictopol well your opinion is based on a made-up number. All boosters had significant impact.

@jerome @erictopol

I'm not even claiming a number, I'm asking what the number is.

Also, I'm not comparing booster to nothing. I'm asking what is the difference in effectiveness between the $110 booster and another booster.

@Sibshops @jerome @erictopol I think you’re missing the important point that they’re going to charge for ALL shots now, regardless of how old the booster might be. No more free boosters for most folks, because fuck us I guess.
@Sibshops @erictopol it’s a new variant base, not just an additional vaccine.

@erictopol

Sums up American Medicine in general.

@erictopol so anyone naming less than 50k/yr not gonna get vaccinated. Great.
@erictopol Do we know if full approval will be given as opposed to EUA, and if off-label prescribing will be allowed for the booster vaccines?
@erictopol This is why we need single payer.
@erictopol we shouldn’t allow for-profit healthcare
@ShadSterling @erictopol Yep. And this is why M4A is ultimately unworkable. Until we address greed and waste on the provider side, all we'd be doing is funneling tax money to health care corps.
@erictopol What happened to pairing it with the flu vax into a single shot?

@erictopol

In general, it can be said that a state creates the foundations on which companies build.

This is not a problem as long as the state is aware of its responsibility, its power and when it has to intervene in the market because it is not developing in the interest of the common good.

@erictopol It just goes to show that it's entirely about profit for them and nothing else, which is infuriating.
@erictopol it is despicable but absolutely predictable
@erictopol let’s not even mention that XBB.1.5 won’t even be the dominant strain when they finally get around to releasing it.
@erictopol I got surprise-billed $135 *after* insurance adjustment for a PCR test
@erictopol capitalism sucks. one of its worst aspects is for-proft healthcare

@erictopol
The question is always, "do we have all the money? No? Then we don't have enough money." Same reasoning that let the Sacklers rationalize the creation of a massive opioid crisis.

There are a group of people for whom a rusty guillotine would be a far kinder fate than letting them come fully to terms with the results of their actions -- in direct fashion. Also kinder than they deserve.

@erictopol and Pfizer has jacked up the price of Eliquis over 20% in a year.
@erictopol Was mehrere Milliarden bedeutet, thats all I wanna say!
Bridge Access Program

This Program provides no-cost COVID-19 vaccines to adults. Learn how.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
@erictopol No worries. Everyone will die and that's the end of everything.

@erictopol

Well, that's Socialism for corporations and hard Capitalism for citizens.

Disgusting and immoral.

@erictopol

shouldn't we overhaul the entire way we handle pharma patents? looking at how the industry profits off the US and is able to run ads, compared to other countries, one can understand how these conspiracy theories get started.

@erictopol

Manufacturers took note of the fact that there were more COVID deaths among Republican voters than among Democrat voters, because of anti-vax propaganda. By charging $110 per shot they hope to put the vaccine outside the reach of poorest voters and thus reverse that bias in the next wave.

#COVID #AntiVax #GOP #Voting

@erictopol yup. and now they want to try and make the money back that they feel they missed. GREED. It’s a MUG.
@erictopol Americans can have a little single payer healthcare, as a treat
@erictopol pharmaceutical greed is grotesque. The opioid crisis is criminal and where are Medicaid/Medicare lawyers on that one? I’m sick of my tax dollars being ripped off by big Pharma
