This winter is going to be amazing
@DrPsyBuffy I mean, everybody’s still boarding planes on a whim and flying recreationally while we’re having a full-blown climate crisis so why not get COVID too while they’re at it (I do feel sorry for people who moved hundreds or thousands of miles away from their loved ones out of economic necessity &/or before they realized how bad frequent flying was for the environment, though).
@NireBryce @PedestrianError right? I had to read it twice, but it's kinda weird to allude that immigrants shouldn't be able to visit their home country, when by far frequent flyers are tourists from the global North and people flying for work.
@PedestrianError @DrPsyBuffy on the other hand, cognitive decline as a consequence of multiple reinfections can help to deal with climate anxiety
@DrPsyBuffy @Baley that is absolutely so fucked up I don’t even know what to do with it
@DrPsyBuffy
And there's no masking requirement, right? Good grief.

@DrPsyBuffy
The chances of long covid don't stay the same, but it increases with every reinfection.

This laissez faire approach is setting the US up for an avalanche of long covid cases that will not only harm the economy, but could push our weak healthcare system past the breaking point.

It's like, instead of the Titanic accidentally hitting the iceberg, they had a modern iceberg radar and decided to play chicken with the iceberg.

@Jeramee @DrPsyBuffy
I believe you but I'd be interested in reading a source on this if you have one.

@Tsutsuku @DrPsyBuffy

Another article (can't find it right now) showed long covid chances are something like 2% with the first infection, 5% with the 2d infection, 10 % with the 3d, etc.

I think this article explains a different study, but with similar findings.

https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/do-repeat-covid-infections-increase-the-risk-of-severe-disease-or-long-covid/#:~:text=Notably%2C%20the%20investigators%20found%20that,years%20after%20an%20initial%20infection.

Do Repeat COVID Infections Increase the Risk of Severe Disease or Long COVID?

Many repeat infections are mild, but some studies suggest people who have been infected with COVID more than once are at a greater risk of severe disease or long COVID

@Jeramee @DrPsyBuffy I hate to be the bearer of bad news here, but we're already at the breaking point. Ask anyone who works in Healthcare how well staffed they are or if they feel that their patient acuity is such that they feel safe. Bets are if they work in a hospital they're uneasy or a very new grad who doesn't realize how much has changed since the start of the pandemic

@terradi @Jeramee @DrPsyBuffy Several of my friends in public healthcare in BC - nurses, doctors, paramedics & other frontline medical staff quit their jobs because they are sick/tired of our governments treating them like all their frontline lives are completely disposable.

It is beyond messed up!

@msquebanh @terradi @DrPsyBuffy

"Front line" is a term of war, and, I think, points to the problem.

When capitalists go abroad, they usually bring troops for "negotiation." They don't care if the troops die, so long as it's profitable.

Similarly, at home, they don't care about the people they people they put at risk so long as the stock market grows.

Covid originated in China, yet, with over 3x the population, they've had fewer deaths because they value human life over profit.

@terradi @DrPsyBuffy

Thank you for the update. I was a mental health worker, but have been working in SE Asia the last 10 years. Working in a hospital is stressful enough, I can only imagine how bad it is now.

I have 2 kids and don't know if I ever want to come back. I don't want to subject them to our society's slow self destruction.

@netopwibby @DrPsyBuffy Thank you for doing the good work! 👍✨💖

@DrPsyBuffy American Airlines endorsing bioterrorism.

Damn.

@DrPsyBuffy @AlSweigart capitalism at its best. 💰💰💰
@DrPsyBuffy You're such an optimist: I don't think we'll have to wait for winter.
@DrPsyBuffy so when do i have to test? what are the symptoms am looking for?
@DrPsyBuffy Whenever an airline advertises at me I ask them how they guarantee a zero covid journey. I haven't had an answer yet ... so guess what, I haven't spent any money with any airline.

@DrPsyBuffy

THINK ABOUT THE PROFITS, PEOPLE!

@DrPsyBuffy I mask when flying as well for obvious reasons. Now, more obvious.

And I am expecting a surge sometime before EOY

@DrPsyBuffy

Please Boost and Favor this!

It's something we may not thinking about but it's something that could kill you!

@DrPsyBuffy we held our teenager back from an international trip with friends last weekend since they had tested positive 3 days before the flight. It was a European airline and they were going to let us rebook with no change fee with proof of covid ($70 rapid tests done by CVS) but then they didn’t on a technicality. We are out sooo much money because they didn’t go, but they were pretty sick for a week and still testing positive. Glad we pulled the plug but ouch, airline made it hurt.
@DrPsyBuffy Staycations looking better and better. Otherwise known as geez, just stay home because #CovidIsntOver!
@DrPsyBuffy
Weird, in EU flights ive taken i still see the warning that it is illegal to board a flight while knowingly sick with covid
@mamsell

@DrPsyBuffy

And people ask me why I'm not doing cons and traveling to visit friends again...

@DrPsyBuffy 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️
@DrPsyBuffy Eventually both pilots are going to have covid and fly anyway, and the effects of high altitude will kick in and there will be a big crash. Breathing problems and high altitude do not mix.
@mike805 OMG that would be so horrible. And they probably would never say it was COVID related.
@DrPsyBuffy whoa! I just drove 10 hours with COVID from Sacramento to Portland, ditching the flight I had booked. I would have done it regardless but I can’t believe they would be fine with me getting on the plane the day after testing positive.
@DrPsyBuffy Do you know if that is an AI or a person? (though I can definitely believe it's the latter)
