Nurse, mom to two humans and four cats, fish hobbyist, reader, book hoarder, Japanese culture lover, neopagan, and aspiring writer. That's me.
I am continually trying to become a better human and ally to marginalized groups. I welcome correction as I know I will make mistakes along the way.
We all need a dose of positivity after this brutal week, and Team Big Picture is serving it up with an edition of the Week in Wins that looks at a few of the bright spots from Tuesday's election. Because believe it or not, there were some. Read more below. https://buff.ly/3ClQbZa

Our Wins of the Week piece is usually open to our paid subscribers only, but after this week we wanted to make sure everyone had a least a little glimmer of positivity in their inbox.

When an article says "some scientists think" then remember this: I, a scientist, once thought I could fit a whole orange in my mouth. I could, it turns out, get it in there, but I hadn't given sufficient thought to the reverse operation. 🧵

The Mr. Rogers advice for moments of crisis is a useful thing to remember right now.

Look for the helpers.

Look for the people organizing to protect the most vulnerable.

Look for the people who have been concretely planning for how to respond, and are ready to implement.

Join them, if you can.

Congratulate yourself for doing difficult things, even if they might not seem difficult to others.

Democrats don't want Donald Trump dead.

We want him alive, massively shamed by a landslide loss in November, legally tried and imprisoned, and to live long enough to see his wealth and reputation destroyed before dying a natural death.

I've deleted my NaNoWriMo account. They not only have a generative 'AI' sponsor, they're defending letting you use AI to plaigiarise yourself to 50,000 on the basis that disabled people need AI.

I have a cognitive disability that makes it very difficult for me to write and I am FURIOUS.

Make no mistake, it is very fucking ableist to use people like me as a shield when you are STEALING FROM PEOPLE LIKE ME. They are the ableist ones here. https://www.404media.co/nanowrimo-ai-policy-classist-ableist/

NaNoWriMo Says Condemning AI Is ‘Classist and Ableist’

The organization that runs National Novel Writing Month, a November challenge to write 50,000 words, said "the categorical condemnation of Artificial Intelligence has classist and ableist undertones."

Last night, my husband and I let our 3-year-old, who is obsessed with space, stay up late and watch the stars come out. She was so happy she couldn't sit still. This is one of those moments I'm going to hang onto for a long time.
Today I attended the wake for a girl who will never get to grow up. And now I am sitting at home with the baby monitor flickering between my baby boy and my toddler girl and thinking about how stupidly lucky and fortunate I am.
I have reached the peak of baby hilarity. Who knew accepting baby's fingers when he tries to shove them in your mouth and then gently shaking them back and forth was the most hilarious thing ever?
