BREAKING: Illinois Supreme Court finds the IL assault weapons ban constitutional.

It’s no accident that Blue states have a 40% LOWER murder rate than do Red states. Gun safety laws work in reducing gun violence.

A win for freedom & justice today.✊🏽

Well done to IL Democrats and Governor Pritzker for keeping us safe and upholding justice.

US suicides hit an all-time high last year

About 49,500 people took their own lives last year in the U.S., the highest number ever. That's according to new government data posted Thursday. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has not yet calculated a suicide rate for the year. But available data suggests suicides are more common in the U.S. than at any time since the dawn of World War II. Experts caution that suicide is complicated, and that recent increases might be driven by higher rates of depression or limited availability of mental health services. The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention says a main driver is the growing availability of guns.

Which is the cause, which the effect?

@QasimRashid coincidentally I just read this article in Psyche magazine https://psyche.co/ideas/why-religious-belief-provides-a-real-buffer-against-suicide-risk

It’s worth a read, very interesting stuff.

Why religious belief provides a real buffer against suicide risk | Psyche Ideas

Under-recognised as a protective force against suicide, religious faith has multiple features that help to save lives

Psyche

@Yell0wbag @QasimRashid There is no consistent relationship between suicide rates and religious beliefs or the lack of them: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7310534/ .

There is a very consistent relationship between suicide rates and the ready availability of guns - and other lethal means.

Do not try to change the subject.

Religion and Suicide Risk: a systematic review

Although religion is reported to be protective against suicide, the empirical evidence is inconsistent. Research is complicated by the fact that there are many dimensions to religion (affiliation, participation, doctrine) and suicide (ideation, attempt, ...

PubMed Central (PMC)

@michael_w_busch @Yell0wbag @QasimRashid
the review you linked concludes differently than you did:

"After adjusting for social support measures, religious service attendance is not especially protective against suicidal ideation, but does protect against suicide attempts, and possibly protects against suicide. Future qualitative studies might further clarify these associations."

@[email protected] @[email protected] @QasimRashid You appear to have only read the abstract, not the review itself - which explains how there is no consistent relationship between religious affiliation or belief and any of suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, or suicide rates.

Again: Do not try to change the subject.

And to prevent further derailment, I am done.

@michael_w_busch @Yell0wbag @QasimRashid

Michael, sorry for getting in the way.

the u.s. worship of guns is insane. definitely makes suicide easier. not to mention kids accidently killing familiy members. sheesh.

i was just curious about religious attendence perhaps being a proxy for connecction with community.

i have no interests in religious beliefs nor certain ones being used as disguise for inhumane politics.

chow.

@michael_w_busch @Yell0wbag @QasimRashid ok, jonathan's article and you, use the word 'belief' but that's not the most important aspect of religion.
@QasimRashid and yet there is #SCOTUS soooo 🤷‍♂️
@QasimRashid Okay, now we just have to build a wall and make Indiana pay for it.
@QasimRashid 40% LOWER Murder Rate does NOT sound very Pro Life to me!
@QasimRashid Except that gun ownership per capita maps and homicide per capita maps don’t really correlate all that well. New Hampshire, for instance, has lax gun control laws, high per capita gun ownership but an exceedingly low homicide rate. What _does_ correlate strongly with homicide rate is poverty rate.

@it_follows @QasimRashid
I asked ChatGPT what other outcomes have a positive correlation with gun ownership and it offered:

1. Homicide Rates
2. Suicide Rates:
3. Domestic Violence Deaths:
4. Accidental Shootings: particularly among children.
5. Police Shootings:
6. Mass Shootings:.
7. Strain on Mental Health Services: increased demands on mental health services
8. Escalation of Conflicts: more lethal outcomes.

@QasimRashid

When preparing for war, one must oppose all gun restriction legislation.

#WhiteChristianNationalism is about #CivilWar

*edited for clarification

@QasimRashid Every citizen has the right to defend themselves from this overzealous and tyrannical police-state our government currently is. We cannot do that without the same "assault weapons" our government has.

What has changed since I was a kid? Gov't-run public schools openly teach Marxism to confuse them about nearly everything. It's no wonder the mentally ill are shooting random people.😢

FYI your hands can be a dangerous assault weapon should they be amputated to prevent that?

@Percolate1706 @QasimRashid well that was a boring rehash of Foxisms. Are you sure you should be here instead of on Xitter? Ammosexuals have a home there, I hear.
@QasimRashid Sadly, there's no way this SCOTUS will let this stand.

@QasimRashid Yes, but I'm not sure if there is such a huge causality here.

Remember correlation alone does not prove causality.

It might be more related to the fact that living conditions are, overall, that bit better in blue states, and that the marginalized homicide waiting to happen, is treated that little more like a human there?

Just a statistics game. Not saying that everything is better for everyone, but in a sack with 100 balls, n balls are feeling better treated.

@QasimRashid
(Sorry for that “statistics example at the end of last toot”, but statistics is a bit heartless.)

Just observing that we have much lower gun violence in Europe, even in EU states that have relatively liberal gun laws, but then few EU states have a society that is so “raw and brutal” as US society.

@QasimRashid finally some good news this week... 🙏
@QasimRashid definitely correlated, but this is an oversimplification, one that downplays other contributions - the absolutely dire economic situation that has persisted since Covid, shockingly obvious and constant environmental disastors, and a political climate that borders on megolomanic absurdity. Guns are certainly a part of the problem, but to imply they are the root and not a symptom is unfair and narrow.
