#actuallyAutistic #parents, how do you avoid sensory overload when dealing with small #children?

The summer holidays are coming up here, and I'm more scared than happy.

My 5-year-old expressively stated that he hates when rooms are silent and needs to fill the air with constant talking, babbling, humming, music or audiobooks.

I, on the other hand get #sensoryOverload easily and then need quiet for a while. I'm not mad at him, we just have diverging needs.

Any tips?

Does he tolerate headphones or earbuds?
That may be a way to provide him with the stimulation he needs while keeping you protected from overstimulation.

@robrecht thatwould allow for him to be in the same room while listening to something, yeah. I'll give that a try!
@lizzard @robrecht check out bone conduction headphones. They have children’s sizes. These type of headphones do not go into or over the ear canal so are not irritating. They transmit sound via bone conduction. They do not block environmental sounds either. I prefer them unless I need noise cancellation like on a plane or a noisy environment.
