Voyager 2 Is Alive and Well!

For those of you wringing your hands for the last few days over the silence of one of the fabled Voyager spacecraft, launched in 1977 to the outer solar system & beyond, you can chill now.

After finding a faint signal coming from Voyager 2 despite its mis-orientation, #NASA made an attempt to communicate with the spacecraft. And it worked!!

Read on & be happy that we'll be hearing from deep space for some time to come.

NASA Mission Update: Voyager 2 Communications Pause

Once the spacecraft’s antenna is realigned with Earth, communications should resume.

NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL)
@carolynporco i gotta learn enough physics to understand how we can punch a signal strong enough to reach that little off centered dish 10 billion miles away.

I share a birthday with Voyager 2. If it were to go missing I'd probably suffer an existential crisis.
@CassandraZeroCovid
@carolynporco we once again dodge VYGER!
@carolynporco "The spacecraft also continues on its expected trajectory." can the spacecraft even adjust course with its limited resources?
@carolynporco - Great! Is there somewhere I can read more? The news I've seen so far is is so short on technical detail: what exactly was the mistake that made Voyager 2 turn its antenna, how someone made that mistake, and how they were able to contact it after its antenna was turned?
Voyager 2 phones home and says everything is cool

After sending the command, NASA had to wait 37 hours for a response.

@carolynporco "V-GER" has now outlived by a quarter century Persis Khambatta, the actress whose character merged with it in the 1979 film, Star Trek the Motion Picture.
@carolynporco So glad to have found you on Mastadon! Folks, if you don’t follow @carolynporco you don’t know what you’re missing.
@carolynporco A 37 hour lightspeed round trip!

Someone at JPL needs retraining.
