Trump tried to overthrow an elected government in 2021, and may actually face justice for it. He's made it clear in his 2024 campaign that he will rule as a dictator if elected.

If Big Journalism won't finally take a stand -- in its news coverage, not just in its commentary -- to protect democracy (and by extension journalism), then it'll be directly complicit.

You can't be a mere observer about some things. This is one of them.

@dangillmor may…. Make that will.
@dangillmor filing this under posts I wished I could boost more than once.

@dangillmor Does anyone have an example video of this? Would be a good talking point for some of my family.

Trump Plans to Expand Presidential Power Over Agencies in 2025

The former president and his backers aim to strengthen the power of the White House and limit the independence of federal agencies.

The New York Times

@dangillmor

There are great journalists and professionals, there arent a goodly number of owners.

@dangillmor Same for the Supreme Court on all of these.
@dangillmor there are plenty of journalists in China and Iran. They do what insider journalists in Washington (and Canberra) do, run the stories powerful people want to run and not run those they don't

@dangillmor

Dan, the media isn't going to be just a mere observer, they're going to actively provide Trump with billions of dollars of free advertising again. They're going to work extra hard and spend tons of money to try to make Trump a viable candidate again. The media doesn't think beyond the next click.

Trump Campaign Worried There Might Not Be Enough Indictments To Meet All Fundraising Goals

PALM BEACH, FL—Though new charges are expected soon from both special counsel Jack Smith and a Georgia investigation of the former president, the Trump campaign was said to be privately worried Monday that there still might not be enough indictments to meet all their fundraising targets. “Frankly, we’ve got some…

The Onion
@dangillmor you are exactly right. media has an obligation to report fact. as time goes on I see it move more toward what drives clicks. this is not some profound viewpoint, EVERYONE agrees this is happening.

@dangillmor

Big journalism in the US is owned by Trump supporters, don't expect anything to come from them.

@dangillmor I've seen this said about Trump claiming he will act as a dictator in 2024, but haven't seen the origin of that statement. Could somebody give me a source? Thanks!

@dangillmor Yes, Trump, it is like Nazi Germany . . . if authorities had prosecuted Hitler.
@humourmetom @dangillmor They put him in jail after the Beer Hall Putsch, his first coup attempt. They elected him chancellor after.
@dangillmor That the latest poll shows an even split among the general electorate reminds me that Americans are not that committed to our identity as a beacon of democracy.
@dangillmor They could also do a much better job just observing and accurately reporting on what the Biden administration is actually doing - their jobs. It's not glamorous. It's not a performance. It's just work. But they'd rather watch the fake wrestling of the politicians in name only.
@dangillmor "Big journalism" doesn't have to "take a stand," they just have to do "competent journalism." For example, when the Rs push the Biden-Burisma stuff, the headlines should be "Republicans push long disproven lies." Who cares if they know they are lies. Maybe Republican politicians are the stupidest people on earth, we don't have to read their minds. They are pushing lies.
@DeanBaker13 @dangillmor - Indeed. The elite press tends to react to even moderate criticism from the center-left as if they were being asked to become co-partisans, when mostly they are just being asked to attend to fundamental journalistic values (accuracy, newsworthiness), in a political environment where one party is determined to degrade those values by exploiting a superficial notion of partisan "balance"--an idea that may once have served as a kind of shortcut to the more fundamental journalistic principles but which certainly no longer does so.
@dangillmor betting he will try to srart a coup again if he loses.

@dangillmor For most Americans there are two key ways to avoid being a mere bystander to Trump's criminal effort to become a dictator:

* You can volunteer. Sign up at https://www.mobilize.us/?q=biden This is open to anybody living in the US.

* You can give money. This link works, in whatever amount you can actually afford. You won't hit the cap unless you're a lot richer than I'll ever be. This is restricted to US citizens and green card holders. https://secure.joebiden.com/a/west-bvf?attr=113172809

@dangillmor He has said he would like to use government power to silence media outlets critical of him, and I believe him on that point.

@dangillmor If the survival of our democracy depends on our journalists, we are beyond fucked.

The voters will choose to save it or unite behind the dictator. The journalists aren’t interested in anything beyond profit. Worse, they lean Republican.

One of the supposed heroes of the Watergate scandal, Bob Woodward is slow walking incriminating tapes on Trump.

Why?

@Dan Gillmor I'm pessimistic here - big journalism cares about money only. That's their stand. We need bigger crowdfunded media, not just in US, but everywhere.

@dangillmor 💯

E.g. maybe start with not putting 'lies' in parentheses here. It’s not something the special counsel made up, it’s a fact.

And also while we’re at it: a lie is a lie. It’s not 'factually incorrect' or something. It’s a lie. @nytimes @washingtonpost

@dangillmor I don’t understand how this isn’t the easiest shit in the world to cover correctly. It’s the story of a lifetime for news organizations, all they have to do is literally report the facts and call out Fox for lying the entire time.
@dangillmor
"...and may actually face justice for it..."

@dangillmor This Journalism you talk of is owned balls to bone by billionaires. It does their bidding & Trump would be a boon for billionaires. QED.
@dangillmor As a friend of mine said recently: If one person says the sun is shining and another says it's raining: Don't just quote both of them. Stick your head out the window and see what is going on.
