I dug into the massive brand equity of the bird app, how much it has to lose, and the, to put it bluntly, ridiculous 25+ year history of X.com -- https://moz.com/blog/twitters-brand-equity

@dr_pete I think you hit on the visceral reaction us marketers, and more specifically, search engine optimizers, are experiencing with the demise of Twitter. It's like watching an entire vibrant (but not perfect) active city be demolished piece by piece for absolutely no good reason. Gone will be the ubiquitous Twitter handle for every TV personality (which I'm okay with if they replace it with a federated version). And we will no longer link to user profiles which are now walled
@jon I tried to keep the post as factual as possible, but my less charitable take is that he's going to throw away billions chasing a 24-year ego trip. He could pursue the 'X' concept without the ridiculous brand or throwing everything away.
@dr_pete @jon Peak "I bought this domain name long ago, I'll be damned if I don't use it" energy. Everyone with a website runs into it at one time or another, most don't take action. (At least I got a neat Bluesky username out of it.)

@johnmu @dr_pete @jon

100%.

I have just reinvigorated one of my old domains, but in my case, unlike x.com, I might be adding value.

@dr_pete @jon The part that hit me the most (back in the fall, when the direction was picked) was the loss of the community. It's not the first online community to blow up (how many SEO'ish forums have come & gone?), but it was unexpected, and it was obvious that it wouldn't be easy or fast to replace - if that's even possible.
@johnmu I have the same sadness, though I'm grateful for Mastodon and the Fediverse, and I hope that slowly, over time, it draws a lot of great folks (sort of like how Reddit vs. Digg eventually ended up) @dr_pete @jon
@randfish @johnmu @dr_pete @jon
Ohhh digg vs reddit is a good comparison.

@wilreynolds @randfish @johnmu @dr_pete @jon

And now Reddit is Digging its own grave with the death of third party apps through exorbitant API fees.

@dr_pete it will be interesting to see what their search footprint looks like in 6-12 months after the X domain has a chance to bake
@seanhecking My actual opinion about how bad it's going to end is about 10X worse than I suggested in the blog post.
@dr_pete @seanhecking 10X? That's a lot of X's. Is more X's better, when it comes to X? (This has a lot of potential - sorry)
@johnmu @seanhecking Joking aside, this is exactly the problem with 'X'. It's not a brand. It's not even a word.

@dr_pete @johnmu @seanhecking

Hang on, Brand X - where have i heard that before...

@simoncox @dr_pete @seanhecking it's like when Prince changed his name to [symbol] ... Are you aware of any other single-letter brands? Even with 2 letters, all I can think of are abbreviations.
@datatwingler bookmark.
Hai @kidehen - that's been saved and can be viewed at https://linkeddata.uriburner.com/c/9CH6WIU6
