man american society is obsessed with drinking.

i had to stop drinking a few years ago because 'one day my guts just decided for me, they dont appreciate booze anymore', and so we dont do breweries or wineries much or at all because it ends up just being a lot of sitting around.. and its hard to find stuff to do that isnt basically an excuse to just go drink at various places.

@Viss Same and same. BrewDog has some awesome NA beers and they have a taproom 15 minutes from my house, so that has become the default "go have a beer" location. But when you stop drinking you begin to realize how much advertising the booze industry jacks into the market. Sheesh, it's unbelievable. And how much people drink in TV shows. Those folks would have watched their liver pack it's things and move the fuck out.
@Sempf yeah its wild. Im not AGAINST drinking, i just find that sitting around and watching other people drink is a little boring and usually exclusionary. if you're not like everyone else holding a drink in your hand then its like you're not even there
@Viss I am not great in social situations anyway, so I avoid large groups. The people who I would normally "go get a beer" with all know, so it has been replaced with coffee or NA beer. I can't imagine trying to fit in at a loose social gathering without a drink. Would be ... weird.
@Sempf ive been pushing 'coffee and croissants', and so far its been landing well :D
@Viss Oh man I love me a croissant. šŸ„ā€‹
@Viss @Sempf I worked at both a bar and a coffee shop and realized the a similar trend, though skewed by the time of day. I think people just kinda want to people watch and interact (or not) vs the substance consumed. Of course, I’m also the psychopath that brings a book to a bar and reads at 10:30 pm so feel free to ignore.
@FacetiousPenguin @Viss @Sempf I wish there were more late night coffee places, especially with outdoor seating during the summer. I'm also the person that goes out late at night with a book, and be nice to have more options than just a bar (especially since you basically have to use an e-reader in many bars since the lighting is so low.)
@Shivaekul @FacetiousPenguin @Sempf when i was a kid, there was one in town that was open till like 10pm or 11pm and it was the go-to place for everyone not yet 21, and some folks over 21, who preferred a pool hall and a coffee shop right next door to one another.
@Viss @FacetiousPenguin @Sempf I also got really lucky growing up, there was a starbucks near the movie theater in my town that stayed open until midnight on weekends, and they would let us hang out at their tables even after they closed. So we would sit there for hours playing cards or board games and hanging out. Would love to have something similar now that I'm an adult and have moved away, but even in major cities they can be hard to find, and even rarer in towns.
