#linux question:
What is the best way to install
#Steam on an #arch based system? Using native packages or using #flatpak ?
#gaming #LinuxGaming #PCGaming

@starcross Biased because I don't do/like flatpak, but not running containerized games (Proton) in a container (flat) would help matters.

It's been fine for me, so-.

@starcross I'm not a huge fan of flatpaks, but I've had fewer issues using it for steam personnally. Might just be my system though.

@starcross I personally think it does not matter, because Steam will update itself. I'm not entirely sure how the Flatpak works, but I'm on an Arch based system (EndeavourOS) and Steam updates without a system update. So you only install it once through the installer, but it manages itself, as the installer is just initial install with pacman.

Some people prefer Steam installed through Flatpak, but I don't know why exactly. It shouldn't matter.

@starcross i use native but flatpak would work fine too, especially since it uses flatpak-provided libraries instead so there’s a way lower possibility of incompatibility issues
@starcross i'd recommend the native package just because of better integration with third party software! if flatpak's more your thing it's good too
@starcross I use Arch and the Arch package and runs perfectly from many years
you might have issues either way so "best" is not really objective
I would not recommend flatpack generally, there appears to be a pacman method, I would default to that

How to Install and Use Steam on Arch Linux

Steam is one of the finest platforms for gamers. With the help of Steam, you’re free to enjoy the best games right away! All you need is just tinkering with the system and setting the tools properly. How to install and get started using Steam on Arch Linux is shown.

@starcross For arch I would go with the native package just because it's so well supported on the distro

For literally every other distro though, the flatpak is probably the best choice

@starcross
Your distro vendor and I will love you forever keeping to a clean, pure package system.
#flatpak and #snaps are the spawn of he Devil and to be avoided always.
@gregsie Well I kinda messed up that goal a bit since I do have over 30 flatpaks already, but it has helped keep my package count down to below 1,300 on Artix! (I use it so I dont have both KDE and an unnecessary GNOME install when I only use KDE). But yeah I'm seeing a clear consensus to just using the traditional Artix packages for Steam
