So for my #3dprinting experiment with supports I made this thing in blender and printed it. Taking out the supports was a huge pain in the butt. All those uneven spikes...
Supports were, uh, 31% of the estimated print time. Don't know if the print would have been possible without supports. Maybe I should try it just to see how bad a mess it makes..
@sol_hsa it definitely needs supports! You might win a bit of time and material by modelling a sacrificial self supporting 'ring' just below your spikey ball, and having the spike supports build off of that? Or see what printing it on its side does for you. Organic/tree supports if you're not already.

Tried it without supports and the result was surprisingly good. It was a bit like a spaghetti tree.. =), but after cleaning the worst of the hanging stuff it looks... fine. Not perfect, but I expected the whole thing to collapse and it didn't.

The sacrificial ring is a fun idea. I haven't tried the tree supports as of yet, but they do look easier to take out.
