‘Our daughter asked if we were going to die’: diary of a tourist in Greek wildfires

Andy Bell, 36, recounts escaping the wildfires on Rhodes and how it has changed his view of the climate crisis

The Guardian
@michelle @andy I had a feeling it might be picked up by mainstream media such is the power of the piece. Thanks for allowing it to be shared more widely, Andy.
@michelle all down to your tip mate. They were delightful to deal with too
@andy @michelle holy shit! You were republished in the guardian!?
@cferdinandi @michelle no it was an interview with the journalist

@andy @michelle Oh, sorry for the confusion. I read the first few paragraphs and it read so much like your article that I assumed it was a reprint.

Thanks again for sharing your story.

How are the little ones (and you and your wife) doing now? You did a masterful job of putting the confusion and terror of the moment into words. ❤️

@cferdinandi @michelle yeh everyone is getting better now thanks!
@andy It was all down to your writing. I’m grateful you were able to put such a harrowing experience into words. Glad you’re safe now 💜
@michelle @andy just read this now, such an awful experience. The photo of the little one sleeping on the floor 😢. Thanks for sharing your story

@michelle @andy in 2020 almost 250k square kilometres burnt down the east coast of Australia and our houses were full of toxic air for weeks on end.

At the time, there was an iconic photograph of a kangaroo burnt (and stuck) to a fence, similar to the laughable scene from
Terminator 2 when the world ended.

I don’t think I’ll ever forget that time, or how much it hurt, but it was then I realised how badly we’ve fucked basically everything. There is no realistic point of return from here.

@michelle @andy An excellent read of a horrifying experience. So sorry you guys went through that. So good you're all safe and sound.
