Be kind to yourself

Humanity was fucked before you were even born. It's not your responsibility to fix it. Do what you can to make things better, but don't get upset if it seems like you aren't making a difference. Never feel guilty about indulging in things you enjoy or taking a break.

Life is a accident of chance and circumstance. We didn't get to choose to be alive now — at this moment in history, in this place, under these conditions, etc. We just have to deal with it all as best we can

Humans are dumb. We are a bunch of fuckups and misfits. It's surprising we've made it this far. But we've survived some crazy shit. Maybe we'll survive this too.

The planet will live on regardless. Or not. Doesn't matter. In a few billion years the sun will expand and burn it to a cinder.

Doesn't change the fact that you have to live your life right now.

Kiss your partner. Play a video game. Chat with a friend. Help a stranger. It's all still good even if it's meaningless. Savor the good.

The good stuff is all the more precious for it's impermanence. It's easy to miss. Easy to forget. Easy to drown under entropy and darkness.

But it's there if you look for it, watch for it. If you are kind to yourself it might even come to you, like a deer that steps out from the brush into the open when you sit perfectly still.

Be kind to yourself

@malcircuit What helps me is to think of right here, right now as this secret place only known to myself and those here with me. It flips the script. No longer is this moment worthless because it will vanish forever. Instead, that's the very reason it's so special.
@malcircuit I like this comment a lot
Just to be clear, I count myself among the fuckups and misfits of humanity. We're all just a bunch of apes that are too clever for our own good sometimes lol

@malcircuit

I've always loved Terry Pratchett's quote on the name of our species: "The anthropologists got it wrong when they named our species Homo sapiens ('wise man'). In any case it's an arrogant and bigheaded thing to say, wisdom being one of our least evident features. In reality, we are Pan narrans, the storytelling chimpanzee."

It's so true.

@malcircuit the true meaning of life is to do what you like and don't do what you don't like. It's that simple 😄

@malcircuit

I do try, to make things better than I found them. To be kind to myself while doing so.

But everywhere I look there’s piles of shit and bad ideas that somehow have legs. It’s like a massive to do list and I can’t let it go.

@Kiwiana13C No one is giving you the to-do list except yourself. Do what you can, but it's not your responsibility to fix all the problems of the world. Especially not at the cost of your own sanity.

@Kiwiana13C

Bodybuilders know muscles don't get stronger while you're lifting the weights. They get stronger afterward — while you're sleeping, while you're watching Netflix on the couch. Working out everyday will only sap all of your energy and leave you weaker. It's the same with the mind.

Taking a break and distancing yourself from the chaos helps your body and mind recover, and gives you the space to build the strength needed for the next fight.

@Kiwiana13C @malcircuit While I don't know how to fix it, or even if we can, I do know one thing.

We'll do it together, it's too big for any one of us alone.

Do what you can, and don't forget to make new friends.

@malcircuit
Well. If we don't fix it. Millions are going to die.

So yeah, kind of intentional we must be

@malcircuit This reads like an updated "pale blue dot" in the best of ways. Curious to know if Carl's thoughts inspired it at all?
