So I’m on ep 35 of #TheLongestPromise now, and currently I’m a bit angry. I have no illusions that shi ying is gonna stay dead, but for the moment he is, and so is chi yuan. And in the end shi ying is prolly gonna get the girl. So the narrative is just another iteration of “men have more important things to consider than women’s petty and shortsighted desire to *keep their loved ones alive”. It’s driving me insane!
Throughout the story, chi yuan and *especially* shi ying have treated zhu yan like absolute shit. They never tell her what’s going on and what their plans are, they don’t respect her, they don’t trust her judgment, they dismiss her again and again while claiming to love her and to be acting in her best interest. Girl, if that’s the kind of love that’s on offer, you’re better off without. #TheLongestPromise
This is reminding me why I don’t watch het drama, it’s just “men making women suffer”, ffs
@kittyc Oh dear, that sounds awful. I've been very doubtful of this drama from the beginning because it sounded like it tromps through all the most terrible sexist backwards tropes, but most people in fandom don't talk about such things, they mainly admire the actor 🤯
@thalassa I admire him as well! But I’m seriously starting to question his judgment in signing up for a show like this
@kittyc @thalassa
I understood he had to do this, because of some contract thingy...
@76katriina @thalassa ooh, that explains a great deal
@76katriina @kittyc Really?? How? I would have thought it was something like a cultural appreciation for self-sacrifice and doing the right thing, at the expense of making a woman the stepping stone for a man's character arc (if my impression through twitter osmosis informs me correctly about the story).

@kittyc
"They never tell her what’s going on and what their plans are, they don’t respect her, they don’t trust her judgment, they dismiss her again and again while claiming to love her and to be acting in her best interest."

This is the worst trope in cdramas, and is in #WellIntendedLove that I'm currently watching. "What's going on?" she asks. "Nothing. Everything is ok," he responds, as he then deals with big major things she totally would care about if he treated her like an equal adult.

@jillithd exactly! And if she then fucks up, due to not having been given the full picture, it’s seen as evidence of her naïveté and unworldliness, instead of “completely avoidable if someone had just explained”! In longest promise, fl takes a child to a doctor at one time, which is objectively a bad idea if you know who the child is, but unfortunately she doesn’t, because she’s just been given the job of looking after them without being trusted with the actual facts. Aaarghn!

@kittyc @jillithd This happens in pretty much every single cdrama with a female lead I have watched, except The Eternal Love (there were 2 eps where it happened but those were pretty explicitely portayed as sth wrong) and shows with a very strong female-cast-focus like Legend of Queen Lau or The Sword & The Brocade...

There is an extremely strong assumption that if a man loves a woman, he will try and "shield" her by denying her information so she won't get "involved" in difficult issues...

@ludovica @jillithd gosh, that’s terrible. I don’t remember it being as bad as this in #lovebetweenfairyanddevil , but I’m sure it was there. I’ll definitely check out the shows you mentioned!

@jillithd @kittyc I watched that SUUUPER cheesy firefighter show starring Gong Jun for fun, and it was as cheesy as expected. But at one point after the menfolk had been pulling exactly this BS, the FL gave them both an absolute earful, and the two male leads had this big chat where they were like, we better not do that again, that was actually really disrespectful of (FL).

It was fantastic.

@stygianselkie @jillithd yeeeah, i temember that, really respected them for that! I also remember in that one, ml had this big thing about sparing fl’s and his mum’s feelings, and meanwhile they had long since sorted it out between them and were having a huge laugh at him squirming and trying to think of a lady-compatible way of telling them what they already knew. Honestly that show #huoyanlan was super cheesy but maybe should be given more credit compared to others 🤷🏻‍♀️
@kittyc @jillithd Yesss! Also there was one bit where the second FL gives the second ML a piece of advice about how, if your career track isn't going well, focus on romance. And if romance isn't going well, focus on tidying your house or something. And I think about it ALL THE TIME.
