Trying out this thing :)

I suck at introductions, But here we go, I'm a European langauge guy, both natural langauges and programming languages, I like silly stuff, and talking with nice people. Fan of reading, and otherwise is a serial hobbyist.

@sotolf Another account migration? How Is firefish?
@jrballesteros05 Not really migrating, just trying it out, as I haven't really used anything else than mastodon, I'm not likely to fully move yet at least, as I'm very happy at linux.pizza :) Just trying out something that is a bit different :)

For now it's kind of overwhelming, loads of stuff everywhere, animation, notifications popping up in the corner, tons of buttons that I don't know what do :p so it will take a bit of time. I don't think I will move completely over, since tusky doesn't really support it as far as I know, but time will tell :)
@sotolf It's awesome to see alternatives, it's good for the fediverse. I will be glad to see your shares about firefish πŸ˜ƒπŸ˜ƒ
@jrballesteros05 @sotolf I hadn’t even heard much about it before, so I’ll also be happy seeing updates on the experience.
@bosse @jrballesteros05 @selea was actually the one that made me try it out, he was talking about different services, and I kind of wanted to see how life is "on the other side" as well :) It's still weird, I like some of it, not a fan of others, all the text does seem a bit big, all the animations and flashy things are still a bit weird to me, and it seems a bit heavy on resources, but there may also be settings somewhere that I can tweak to get it to be a bit better :)
@sotolf Top 5 books? :)
@badsynthesis I'm very much a sci-fi nerd, and will weed it down to one book per series:

1. Quarter Share, Nathan Lowell
2. Pandora's star, Peter F Hamilton
3. Trading in Danger, Elizabeth Moon
4. Foreigner, C. H. Cherryh
5. Sidespace, G. S. Jennsen

Probably I forgot a lot of other stuff that I like too, but well, at least right now those would be my favourites.

I also share my reading over at

β€Œ@sotolf I love the railways through wormholes series of books. πŸ™‚

@badsynthesis

@[email protected] @badsynthesis Yeah, it's a really cool consept, I also really enjoy the many characters, and even the weirder ones that kind of feels like they are out of place, or at least many think so, like the sylphen roads :)

@sotolf @clacke Yea they're fun :) Pandora's star is the only one I've read on that list, will need to look up the rest.

Not sure if it's your thing but I really enjoyed Library at Mount Char. Got it as a recommendation when I asked a bookstore clerk for "Lovecraft but without the massive rasism and other crap", and I got it.

@badsynthesis @[email protected] Ah, looks neat, but I'm not into horror at all, most of the things that I like are more good people doing good things to eachother, I think life itself and media and everything is heavy and dark enough around us these days that I don't really tackle well having it get deep into life my entertainment as well.

But really happy that you found somthing that you like though :D
@badsynthesis @sotolf Oh, if you've read Pandora's Star you need to read Judas Unchained, they're basically two halves of one book. All the stuff set up in the first breaks loose in the second.
@[email protected] @badsynthesis Yeah, the second one is wild :D I also quite liked the new series that PFH wrote, "the Salvation Sequence" it's a really fun series as well, but for variety I just shared one series per author :)

@sotolf @badsynthesis I'm "currently" reading Neptune's Brood by Charlie Stross, meaning I started reading it during my leave in Jan–Feb and it has to be around here somewhere.

I liked the first 60 pages and there's a flood of cool concepts in there as the story slowly starts going. Not a criticism, I'm in it for the world-building and characters and any story is just an excuse.

@clacke @sotolf On the subject of good sci-fi, https://adriantchaikovsky.com/children-of-time-children-of-ruin-children-of-memory.html I've read book 1+2 and really enjoying them. Didn't know there was a third. They feel fresh and creative.

"Lovecraft but without the massive rasism and other crap"

@badsynthesis That is an excellent requirements specification.

@sotolf

@clacke @sotolf Thanks, yea I quite enjoy the results so far.

I don't like horror in general, it's that specific kind of horror I can enjoy as long as it's well done. I'm a massive fan of old forgotten gods, lost knowledge etc.
