A dad joke is typically a pun built on misinterpreting specific parts of a sentence. Classic:

— I'm hungry
— Hello Hungry, I'm Dad

In the vignette above, the response is a Dad joke as it misrepresents the first speaker as having meant they like to tell jokes to their Dad rather than telling «Dad jokes». The first speaker doesn't understand this, and is thus accused of being an amateur at Dad jokes.
