bluesky user complains about mastodon: it should not take rocket science just to join a social media.

bluesky: no media tabs, no videos, no gifs, no bookmarks, racism allowed, no report option categories, block and mute list publicly available in the user profile, mayo is a slur, no manual content warnings, moderation powered by AI, no polls, no pinned posts, no privacy setting, slow app.

mastodon: choose an instance 😩

@yesjohn Mastodon aint even that hard to understand. Yes, it's not perfect, but at least it have more features than Bluesky.
@yesjohn get those blue sky bastards
@yesjohn Ok, but honestly, even if it goes against some peoples' abstract decentralization goals:
Let's kill this argument. Choosing an instance actually sucks.
Let's promote a few champions you can join without thinking too much.
@yesjohn I'm still hesitant about switching to chaos.social because I'm not sure about #fedipact yet. You have to have pretty good knowledge about how an instance is run in order to not get burned. It's either doing a lot of work now or a pretty good chance of getting disappointed later. Neither is great.
@yesjohn This is why I'm *mostly* happy with the way mastodon.social is being promoted (though other instances should get a share as well).
Somebody who isn't affiliated with any group running an instance yet should get a general-purpose instance to just use.
Having to wonder "hmm, do I care enough about coffee to join coffee.social?" feels kind of silly.
@yesjohn The #bluesky story is simple: "Go to bsky.app". The #mastodon story can be equally simple: "Go to mastodon.social".
#joinmastodon (.org) is great, but it makes you think too much.
@yesjohn "Mayo is a slur" lmaooo

@yesjohn also, it is gonna be the same "rocket science" to join bluesky in some time.
They will have even more parts to choose between.
You'd have to not only choose an instance (PDS) but also choose BGS, Labeler and Feed generator. But I bet people would stick to defaults (centralized), just like you can register on mastodon.social (same centralized default).

Complexity is just an excuse, it's actually about "oh, this feels just like old twitter and everyone is moving there".

@yesjohn

Okay, it IS dumb, but I don't know if it's any dumber than Spoutible where all you have to do to foil the "smut filter" is add a sticker emoji to the edge of the photo. Posted five full on nudes that way. NOTHING.

@yesjohn But it takes rocket science to join Bluesky too. The rocket science of finding someone who can give you an invite code.
@yesjohn I understand that many people are not tech people, but how fucking hard can it be to pick the biggest instance and make an account and that’s it?
@balssh @yesjohn The conundrum I have seen is "the bigger an instance is, the worse it is run". Also, unless someone is EXTREMELY extroverted... it's going to be the "concert festival" experience where it will be easy to see your faves and the biggest names, but you won't really be interacting with them all that much, and otherwise it's too loud to talk to the people next to you (the local feed flies by so fast you aren't likely to see anything interesting). Then the likelyhood of them just going "meh" and walking away without, say, learning to follow hashtags is rather high, as we saw with the first and second wave of migrations.
@yesjohn cant change your password on bsky...
@yesjohn once the collective social mind has formed a general opinion on something, it is so hard to change it 😔

@yesjohn My spicy take as it pertains to what I've seen in the smutty/furry artist community:

Bark!
@yesjohn its honestly really not hard its basically exactly like email except its for microblogging
@yesjohn Last time I checked, if you run your own instance, you can actually tell who is blocking you by looking at the database. So I wouldn't call it a bed of roses on that front. (But still better than Bluesky.)
@yesjohn more items to your llist
@yesjohn The lack of following hashtags there is a deal breaker for me. The funny thing is, Instagram *years ago* had hashtag following functionality, and as far as I can tell Mastodon's the only major network that's since added this (maybe some other fedi software does too). I discover (and share) so much great content this way, it's really a core feature IMHO.

@yesjohn “mayo is a slur”

What the heck? Am I having an old man moment?

@yesjohn lmao not y'all acting like racism isn't alllowed on Mastodon 🤣🤣

@yesjohn
> mastodon: choose an instance

Thats an issue of the past

The current wave of people (specifically Furries on FA) joining Bluesky dont even know "whats a Mastodon"

They are proud to have gotten an invite from their old Twitter friends to the new Twitter

also
> moderation powered by AI

They currently see it as game what crazy stuff passes through the AI filter, telling me the filter was trained only on mainstream hetero human porn

@yesjohn Not to mention no blocked words! Added with the horrid moderation, it made it a nightmare to open the app for a couple days back in July. Like, not even a full page scroll before I saw a penis.

@kkarhan i think i don't want to... even tho yours seems reasonable

@Jain personally, I don't want "the biggest" denylist and I only see it as a tool to damage control and self-defense and not as a weapon to threaten others with.

@Jain I mean look at that #overblocking on @admin / @admin :

I could take that list serious if they commented the entires and at least provided some reasons...

@Jain a lot of people might suggest I should've put aipub.social or xmrposter.club on that list same list as poa.st but I think that would be #overblocking since bad "#AiArt" and #Monero  fans are maybe not cool, but they don't flood one's instance like an exploding water tower full of feces...

@kkarhan well thank you for the offer and your work but i rather prefer to not be on any list

@Jain Okay...

It's rather a recommendation and.also includes closed instances as a matter of recommendation (i.e. https://social.bund.de ) but that's okay if you don't want a feckton of new signups...
