They will have even more parts to choose between.
You'd have to not only choose an instance (PDS) but also choose BGS, Labeler and Feed generator. But I bet people would stick to defaults (centralized), just like you can register on mastodon.social (same centralized default).
Complexity is just an excuse, it's actually about "oh, this feels just like old twitter and everyone is moving there".
Okay, it IS dumb, but I don't know if it's any dumber than Spoutible where all you have to do to foil the "smut filter" is add a sticker emoji to the edge of the photo. Posted five full on nudes that way. NOTHING.

They are proud to have gotten an invite from their old Twitter friends to the new Twitter
