@mmasnick
Sorry, but I've got to disagree.
Yes, KOSA creates a risk of abuse by bad faith authorities. I'd rather the law be more clear about when this power can be used.
But there are very real dangers now. We need new powers - and social media companies need responsibility.
Better this imperfect bill, and refine it later, than no progress (and no social media responsibilities) at all.
@mmasnick
Understood and we'll just disagree.
I think it's an acceptable compromise to finally create some responsibility and liability for social media companies.
@TCatInReality the problem is that it doesn't though. the responsibility comes from users/partners/advertisers refusing to do business with bad actors to hold them to account.
KOSA just creates a tool for censorship, and (even worse) for companies to IGNORE problems, because the First Amendment would still require actual knowledge. So it creates incentives for companies to take LESS RESPONSIBILITY.
@TCatInReality @mmasnick DeSantis, and many like him, believe any information on sexuality besides missionary position solely for the purpose of producing white babies is a "danger to children", and given they've stacked courts and state legislatures, they will either win easily or present such a long and expensive fight that most web sites will simply self-censor rather than risk it.
This is not a risk or a hypothetical. It is what WILL happen.
Any time you wish to grant "new powers", don't ask "What good could we do with this?" Ask "What harm could THEY do with this?".
@LizardSF @mmasnick
I completely agree
But we know social media are actively harming society too. So, how do we balance the risks?
You don't have to agree, but I think it is past time the social media companies carry responsibilities and liabilities. Given the composition of Congress, the KOSA bill is about as good a compromise as we can get (IMHO)
@mmasnick but its for KIDS SAFETY
you wouldn't be against KIDS SAFETY would you?
are you some kind of ANTI KID SAFETY pedo?!
also anything proposed by Marsha fuckin Blackburn can die in a fire on general principle
"Those who don’t understand the nuances and the ins-and-outs of specific legal proposals, and how they intersect with our legal system might not understand just how dangerous KOSA is. That’s why it’s presented in such a misleading way. It’s just disappointing that Dove got suckered into this, and, in turn, brought Lizzo in to help.
...by endorsing KOSA she’s now saying “Government controls social media now, and I don’t.”"

Apologies. I am late in writing about this just-passed social media legislation in the state where I live, Utah (have to say my home state is Massachusetts). I’m late partly because I’ve been in denial. I can’t believe that laws so disrespectful of teens’ rights of privacy and participation could go on the books. And […]
