Okay, so people are encouraging me to post more here, but maybe to ignore the replies... So I'll post my latest on Elon/Bill Ackman and their rather confused take on free speech that seems focused on punishing journalists for reporting on things these billionaires don't like. https://www.techdirt.com/2024/01/10/free-speech-absolutist-elon-musk-temporarily-bans-journalists-as-free-speech-absolutist-bill-ackman-threatens-slapp-suit-against-journalists/
‘Free Speech Absolutist’ Elon Musk Temporarily Bans Journalists, As ‘Free Speech Absolutist’ Bill Ackman Threatens SLAPP Suit Against Journalists

On Tuesday morning, former politician Tulsi Gabbard, who had to have the 1st Amendment clearly explained to her by a judge after she filed a ridiculous lawsuit to restrict the free speech of others…

A lot has happened around generative AI safety in the last few weeks. “Safety?” You might ask? Yes. Lately it seems to have been moving almost as fast as the development of #genAI and its large language models (#LLMs). I thought it'd be good to freeze the frame - take some time pull it all together in one post (or try) and see if I could give it all a little context: https://www.netfamilynews.org/generative-ai-july-2023-freeze-frame Let me know your thoughts, ok?
Generative AI: July 2023 freeze frame - NetFamilyNews.org

It’s feeling like I need a large language model brain to write about safety with large language models. [I certify that I only wish I had such a brain, and I am a human; I’ve read that ChatGPT-4 can tell lies, which supports this certification’s credibility because the LLM probably wouldn’t out itself as a […]

I am sorry to say that I have had to call out Lizzo. I wish this were not the case, but she's now supporting dangerous legislation. https://www.techdirt.com/2023/04/19/yo-lizzo-youve-been-lied-to-kosa-will-harm-kids/
Yo, Lizzo, You’ve Been Lied To. KOSA Will Harm Kids

It’s always a mixed bag when entertainment industry stars get roped into supporting this or that internet regulation. Remember how there was a Hollywood-backed campaign to have a bunch of big name …

Trip Report! Last month, @ivansigal and I set out on our 550-mile #bicycle storytelling #adventure in the footsteps of the 1966 Farmworker March.

Today's post shares the overall story of our trip, mixed with Ivan's BEAUTIFUL photography, with links to the 9 other stories I wrote along the way. So if you've been curious about our ride, this is the article to read!

Trip Report: Cycling in the footsteps of the 1966 Farmworkers March

In June, J. Nathan Matias and Ivan Sigal undertook a 500-plus-mile fundraising bicycle ride along the route of the 1966 California Farmworkers March. Here's the full report on their journey.

I've been rooting for this and other #Twitteralternatives since we lost the old #birdsite, and now we have #threads – which I think has a better chance of filling the social broadcasting hole #muskstwitter opened up than any of the "clones" to date. More thoughts here: https://www.netfamilynews.org/threads-the-new-social-media-kid It'll never be truly decentralized, right? But its promise to be interoperable makes things interesting, don't you think?
Threads: The new social media kid - NetFamilyNews.org

“Picture Twitter but with a lot less Elon Musk” is how the Wall Street Journal is describing Threads, Meta’s new app. That right there is good news, maybe unusual where tech is concerned. I’ll give you a list of reasons in a moment, but first it’s only fair to state (or rather link to) my […]

Overton windows shift not just by adding weight on one side of the scale, but by taking it off at the other side, and blasting trash in the middle to confuse and disorientate. You can't easily protect yourself from platform owners doing that on purpose if its your only information source.
Weekend scoop with @zoeschiffer for subscribers: Twitter is stiffing Google on its payments for Google cloud, and significant parts of the company’s trust and safety infrastructure could collapse by the end of the month https://www.platformer.news/p/twitter-stiffs-google

The latest Trump indictment is part of a process that could steer the United States back toward the rule of law.

The alternative is stark: If Trump -- or Trumpism -- regains the presidency and Congress, democracy will not survive.

This should be obvious now to every journalist, even the most weak-kneed, both-sides normalizers of extremists. And it's long past time for Big Journalism to act accordingly.

Yet when you look at the coverage, you see that business as usual prevails.

Some useful quotes from @jeffjarvis to keep in mind:

"#ChatGPT is designed to tell you what you want it to say. It is a personal propaganda machine that strings together words to satisfy the ear, with no expectation that it is right."

"It supplies credible-sounding — but not credible — language. That is what it is designed to do. That is what it does, quite amazingly. Its misuse is not its fault."
