After some great conversations on here yesterday, I'm trying a new system for managing tasks.

Here, on my desk, obviously visible, are my semi-regular task rolodex and a whiteboard capturing important things I want to accomplish.

Thanks for the nudge in the right direction @modgalfri 💚

@nomadave Delighted I could help. Looks like a great setup!
@modgalfri It's hard to ignore/forget the important things when they're staring me in the face all day 😃
@nomadave How did your day go? BTW: I did not manage my walk yesterday. That's why it's the only to do on the alternate days...because it's easier to "fail" to do one thing than a list of things...so, I wait until walk is something I can typically manage before adding more to the alternate day tasks. Today is back to hair, litter boxes, garbage. Walk goes to tomorrow. 😹

@modgalfri It went okay! Still really struggling to focus on things I need to do, but having the whiteboard at least helped remind me of what I *wanted* to do throughout the day.

I like the idea of the alternate days and gradually adding more. That's kind of the approach I'm taking.. trying to keep my expectations low and making small adjustments. We'll see how it goes 🤞

How far have you been walking typically?

@nomadave Achievable goals and small bites works best for me, definitely.

I have a short route that is 1.5-2 miles depending on the exact route and a longer ~4 mile route. Haven’t been brave enough to try that long one in a while…just aiming for regular physical activity at this point.

@nomadave Have been thinking about my accountability notes. One thing I use them for is days like yesterday. I can look and see that I’m not walking every other day yet but I HAVE walked more times this month than last. Which means I don’t have to hate myself for not succeeding yesterday because I’m on the right track building the habit.

@modgalfri I hear this! When I'm at my best, I write in my journal every day, and part of that is reflecting on the day before and recording things like this, because it's very easy for me to forget accomplishments like that.

What I love about your suggestion is the format: the fact that you text yourself a note. It's so easy! And in the morning, when I sit down at my desk, I can review what I texted myself and record it in my journal.

@nomadave I’ve gotten lazy about transferring to my written journal…I really enjoy the pen on paper and having a written record (boy have I spent money on different journaling systems). But it’s the motivation not perfection part that matters for me. One of these days I’ll get back to writing in my journal but meanwhile I continue building habits and routines.

@modgalfri Ha, I hear spending money on journaling systems and tools 😬

I've spent so much time and effort building habits and routines, only for them to fall apart, that it's really hard to be confident that this time will be different. I'm trying, but I'm also expecting it not to last longer than a couple of months.
