Other thing that comes as a surprise is that Mastodon folks (as of right now) are mostly fact and discourse oriented people instead of feel-good photo diary, travelling and such - those don't get much "likes" or "attention" or comments here, at least that's what I have noticed. Many care about those superficial metrics.

Statements, discussion about tech, social media, AI and politics get more traction but if you saw a butterfly and posted a photo of it, that is "meh" for many. It's a turn off for grandparents who just want to post pictures of their flowers. #Mastodon #Fediverse #Twitter #X #XTwitter #TwitterX #SocialMedia

@rolle Hmm. Gotta be honest, this hasn't been my experience at all. There are loads of people on here who post whimsically about their obscure and often curiously pointless hobbies and interests! It was one of the things that convinced me that the fedi was going to be my new online home. There's a whole community devoted to posting pics of moss, for example - look up #mosstodon. There's a lovely lady on here who is unironically obsessed with ants - follow @futurebird (you won't regret it!). There are several people I follow who mostly post terrible jokes, such as the Australian musician @dgar. And if your interest is flowers, #bloomscrolling and #FlowersOfMastodon are the hashtags to follow.

There's something here on the fedi for everyone, even if it can be a little harder to find than it would be on a centralised platform.

@BarrenPlanet Glad to hear. I'm merely stating an opinion I've heard from many, but I've also seen interaction on more niche subjects. Need to dig in more to them. Thanks for the recommendations.

I tend to get way more engagement when I post a picture of flowers to the bloomscrolling tag than when I talk about tech. I am not complaining though. Flowers are good!

@faassen @BarrenPlanet @futurebird @rolle
I get more engagement out of a dad joke than a song I’ve written.

@rolle @BarrenPlanet @futurebird @dgar this is the problem with not having an algorithm which looks at what sort of stuff you post and recommends similar stuff from random strangers.
@DrHyde
@rolle The official Mastodon app - which is what most newcomers end up using - does sort-of do this with its Recommended tab.

@BarrenPlanet @futurebird @dgar @rolle

+1 to this. I see more interaction with "slice of life" posts.

What I like most is I can get both

@pseudonym
I love the variety of stuff I see from the people I follow! It's seeing my scattered brain in a real time scroll. Puppies, flowers, lπŸ‘€k crochet, painting, ohhhhh new indictment??? Yes, I keep up like thatπŸ˜†
@BarrenPlanet @futurebird @dgar @rolle
@BarrenPlanet @rolle @futurebird @dgar I agree with both of you. There are so many people who post/rant incessantly about politics and just complain in general, but there are also so many lovely accounts that have their focus set on better stuff. It just takes patience and some work to find, follow, and engage with those you most relate to.
@likewise @rolle @futurebird @dgar While almost everything I post is serious political stuff, I'd not enjoy my online experience without following a bunch of people who keep their own politics offline! That guy (@AbandonedAmerica) who just goes around taking exquisite pics of derelict buildings? I need that in my feed. The one who just blurts out random stoner thoughts all day (@cosmicallyf)...yeah that's light relief. The grumpy fella who just posts esoterica, curios and bizarre facts (@Sardonicus), gimme some of that! The non-binary person who has a camera in their hedgehog house and enjoys baiting Linux nerds into being rickrolled (@doot) and deliberately getting critical technical details wrong to infuriate reply guys? That's funny shit! πŸ˜†
@BarrenPlanet @futurebird @dgar @doot @AbandonedAmerica @Sardonicus @rolle @cosmicallyf @likewise I have to agree. My feed being full of both politics and non-political stuff is what helps keep it interesting for me here.

@BarrenPlanet
@MaJ1

@Sardonicus must indeed be grumpy. In my short time I can't recall ever interacting with him, yet I find myself blocked. I wouldn't have even known had you not made me aware of him.

@BarrenPlanet @futurebird @dgar @rolle
Hashtag following doesn't work as well for folks on a low population or niche-interest server. Encourage new folks to start on a medium-to-large server.

Hopefully we'll work out the server-migration woes eventually (follower "lossage", lost history)

@dveditz @futurebird @dgar @rolle The *key servers have already implemented the ability to import content archives. There's even work being done to extend this to non-Activity Pub platforms. I've been saying from the start that improved account portability should be top of Eugen and Co's job jar, but they keep not making the promised improvements, which is one among many reasons I jumped ship from Mastodon.

Not dissing Mastodon here at all, just acknowledging some misgivings, and making clear that I personally prefer the increased freedom and better features of the Misskey forks.

@BarrenPlanet @futurebird @dgar @rolle

I should have noticed your server--that's one of the features that has interested me in calckey!
