A REMINDER, JUST IN CASE IT SLIPPED YOUR MIND: #BlackMastodon #Mastodon #BlackPeople #Enslavement
@popcornreel People having to actually post this in 2023 is... surreal.
@popcornreel in the 21st century we should not have to tell people that slavery is bad. No if, ands or buts. #mikedrop
@popcornreel and is, sadly still with us.
@popcornreel Example from the records of one of my white ancestors. A benefit this woman (Vilet) got from being a slave was popping out a new slave baby every 14 months or so. I wonder if she was allowed to keep them. What skills did she learn that benefitted her personally? #Slavery #BenefitsOfSlavery #Livestock

@PeggyStuart @popcornreel Best-attempt transcription into modern English:
Rindey, a negro girl, daughter of Vilet, was born November 27th 1810.
Viney, a negro girl, daughter of the above, was born April 4th 1812.
Charles, a negro boy, son of the above, was born August 4th 1813.
Robert, a negro boy, son of the above, was born December 24th 1814.
Henry, a negro boy, son of the above, was born February 18th 1816.
Nancy, a negro girl, daughter of Mary, was born April 14th 1817, and Mary departed this life the 15th of the same month.

[Outside of the transcription, I knew that horror stories like this came with American slavery, but it doesn't make reading them any easier.]

@PeggyStuart @popcornreel horrifying to see human beings written about like that, such casual evil 🤢
@popcornreel or white people or any colour come to that.
@popcornreel slavery is bad for all races and colors of skin
@popcornreel black people were enslaving black people long before white people benefited from it
@popcornreel Somebody posted here that saying slaves profited from their enslavement is like saying Jews profited from Holocaust because in the concentration camps no one suffered from obesity
@RushGirl @popcornreel Yea, cuz everyone knows that you just spawn into existence with knowledge of Einstein, all before him and after, you just choose to be uneducated and poor lmao
@popcornreel No fucking shit? Who in the entire fucking world, would fucking think that "AcTuAlLy SlAvErY gOoD cUz pOc (somehow) BeNeFiTeD fRoM iT"
Just...???? What brain rot do people have that inspires them to think that? Like, yea, racism, but how does that benefit a slave when they're whipped or worked for days without rest and lacking in necessities. Wow, such opportunities those black people had, they were stripped of their culture, forced to work in unlivable conditions, were used as cattle (and that puts it fucking lightly), and their homeland got destroyed, as a treat.
@popcornreel It's amazing that this would even be necessary to say in 2023, but ignorance & evil are a toxic mix.
@popcornreel This is by design. The moment an 'entity' throws in question what should be worldwide common knowledge (slavery is evil, all humans have rights, etc) serves to said entities various purposes: makes life harder to those that clearly understand, gives another energy kernel to those who cling on the wrong, all while the entities reap the rewards.
@popcornreel
Black people are still getting fucked for slavery. The sick part is a lot of white people blame black people for slavery. Talk about victim shaming.
@popcornreel cannot believe it has to be said in the Future Year 2023 but here we are 🤦‍♂️

@popcornreel I love that so many folks are sharing this. But this version of the graphic has been edited to omit its creator. I thought you and your followers might like to see the original.

The creator’s name is Alfred “Shivy” Brooks. He’s a teacher who is running for the school board in Atlanta.

Alfred “Shivy” Brooks II on Instagram: "Combating the assault on teachers, education, and teaching the truth in southern states is ever ending. As an advocate for teachers, students, and our families in the education space for many years… I cannot say that I am surprised by the overt attempts to whitewash our history. What I can say, is that we have a responsibility to be intentional about who we are electing to serve on our school boards. These are the local policy makers that will either comply with these backsliding statewide policies or stand up for what is right! 🫵🏽This is why I need your help. Over the next few weeks, our campaign for the Atlanta Public School Board needs to reach 25,000 voters through direct mail. This is EXPENSIVE… but this is one of the best ways for us to reach voters. If a fraction of my IG family that will like this post would chip in a few dollars to our campaign, we’d be able to get this done by Sunday. 🫶🏽 No donation is too small. Together we can do a lot! Dear @markwyner @popcornreel, Yes, it is 2023 and this is now: https://www.thedailybeast.com/florida-schools-will-teach-how-slavery-brought-personal-benefit-to-black-people.
Gov. DeSantis repeated this a few days later. https://www.businessinsider.com/desantis-says-black-people-benefited-from-skills-learned-in-slavery-2023-7

I can recall the pro-apartheid discourse (in South Africa) that Blacks were better off under minority rule because ... oh I just can't repeat it. It hurts.

Florida Schools Will Teach How Slavery Brought ‘Personal Benefit’ to Black People

The Florida Board of Education has approved shocking new standards for African American history, despite overwhelming backlash from the public.

@popcornreel the fact that some white people are trying to spin it like it did is fucking disgusting.
