@unchartedworlds awesome, best wishes for this new instance @tillshadeisgone
@stavvers @tillshadeisgone @unchartedworlds I have a genuine question. What is the difference between being Gay and being Queer? I've heard both terms being used but in older media and I thought it was the same thing. Please, enlighten me because I really don't know.

@gocu54

Well, there isn't one ultimate definition for either of them! Both have been used in different ways over many years.

Some people like "queer" because it's an umbrella term covering any kind of deviation from sexual-orientation norms. Some people dislike it, usually because it's been thrown at them as a term of abuse.

Some people use gay to mean specifically same-sex or same-gender preference, as distinct from bi - but historically, gay has also been used as an umbrella term.

@unchartedworlds So queer and bi are basically the same thing? Oh, I see now. thanks for explaining it. I'm personally straight but I support queer people.

@gocu54

No, because there are queer people who only have same-sex attractions, and there are bi people who wouldn't call themselves queer :-)

@unchartedworlds Oh, I see. So, queer and bi are 2 different distinctions.

@gocu54

Yes, bi would usually mean specifically that you're attracted to people of more than one gender (e.g. both men and women, or both women & nonbinary people), whereas some people who only have same-sex / same-gender attractions might still call themself queer. Also, queer often has a connotation that you know you've gone outside the norm and you're happy about that, whereas bi is a bit more like "a practical description".

But each can still mean different things to different people!

@unchartedworlds Oh, I see, so queer is more of a pride term while Bi is more of a description of what a person would be attracted to e,g, men and women or non-binary. I understand now. I have a slightly slow brain. I feel like I'm running windows 98 in m head lol.

@gocu54

Haha, I like your metaphor :-)

It is kind of an endless-learning area though, so I sympathise! I've been out as bi for 20-odd years now and I'm still always reading and learning how people think about these things.

Also, just to add one more dimension to your summary there, "bi" can be a label we embrace and celebrate too :-)

@unchartedworlds Thanks for explaining that. I know how important it is to be your authentic self and I celebrate that. It's good to be who you are. It's just too bad that those in power are simply too old and hot headed to understand.

@gocu54

So there isn't an easy answer about the words! & maybe the most helpful answer is to understand that different people might have different ways of using them, & different reasons for preferring them. If you keep that in mind, you probably won't go far wrong :-)

@unchartedworlds @gocu54 A sweetie of mine likes to quote that

"Labels make useful servants but terrible masters."

@grinningcat @unchartedworlds Interesting. I've never heard that one before but I like it.
@unchartedworlds @tillshadeisgone
Do black queer folk not fit into normal communities? Why the need for separation, isolation?
@coopofeverything @unchartedworlds so that we can be ourselves without having to deal with constant microagressions or having to always be explaining ourselves to ppl who don't get us. I recommend doing some googling about ppl who are multiply marginalized
@unchartedworlds @tillshadeisgone nice! That's one of the cool things about mastodon, being able to form meaningful groups, but still be connected to the broader world.
@unchartedworlds @tillshadeisgone What a wonderful mission for an instance. I wish you well as you grow.
