Tory talk of abandoning net zero measures in a desperate attempt to cling onto power, while we all burn.
The sheer malevolent short-termism of it.

@ProfLouiseL I think Chris Skidmore said the most sensible thing yesterday... (taken from the Guardian Politics live blog from Friday at 2.40pm)

Labour failed to point this out during the campaign

Tories Hold Boris Johnson's Seat But Lose the Safe Ones

It's been a mixed set of results for the by-elections this week. The Conservatives lose the two safe seats by some margin, meaning serious trouble for them a...

@ajc418 @ollybenson Difficult, though, to say "don't vote for those people because they're responsible for the thing you don't like" when you are also pursuing the same policy. But yes, they could be more positive in promoting all net zero policies.

@ProfLouiseL @ajc418 @ollybenson

The argument to make is that #ULEZ had had cross party support and opportunists are now going against it because they are putting short term political gain ahead of people's health.

Unfortunately that argument can be made against both Starmer and Sunak.

@ProfLouiseL @sinabhfuil They are advocating genocide, and should be treated as such.
@ProfLouiseL I reckon it's politically stupid, as well. It keep them their core vote - those convinced the climate catastrophe is fake, or who think they'll be dead before it matters - but it won't get them enough votes to win. And voters in SE England will see through it.
@patrickhadfield I'd like to think so. Thing is, though, even some of my left and green leaning neighbours have started falling for misinformation about LTNs, for example, talking of being trapped in their neighbourhood. They seem oblivious to the nasty nexus of "anti" ideas behind the anti #LTNs or anti #ULEZ. Same old tangle of people who also deny #ClimateCrisis and #COVID, #AntiVaxxers, #AntiLockdown. Piers Corbyn, for example.

@ProfLouiseL @patrickhadfield There's an "appeal to the nerds" here for Labour. Do some simple fact checking. Turn that into a political message. And then use it to attack the Tory "culture war" think tanks.

Labour has to find a way to deactivate the constant stream of Right Wing Contrarian bollocks coming out of 55 Tufton St. Make it obvious it's all bollocks and turn it against them. It shouldn't be just groups like LedByDonkeys or Desmog doing Labour's work for it.

@ProfLouiseL @patrickhadfield Don't fight ERG, CRG, NZW, IEA, Taxpayers Alliance, GBNews and so on, on their terms. Instead, get the electorate to laugh at them for spreading obvious lies.

When people like Grant Shapps spread obvious lies about ULEZ (when their signature was on the request to expand) Point this out and get people to laugh at Shapps being Shapps again. In Johnson's old ward point out that Johnson started ULEZ, so why are the Tories complaining?

@jbond @ProfLouiseL @patrickhadfield
Hard agree here. This seems like such an obvious tactic: the Torys keep spouting so many easily debunked lies, they’re leaving multiple open goals. I’m mystified that the Labour Party aren’t making more of this…

@peteralee @ProfLouiseL @patrickhadfield Yes. And the obvious elephant traps that the Tories keep leaving for them. That Labour then walk straight into.

There's an open goal. The keeper has left the pitch. The Labour striker gets distracted by the other side's baying fans behind the goal. And hits the cross bar.

@jbond @ProfLouiseL @patrickhadfield He could also legislate to get the funding source(s) to be revealed. Ultra violet light is a great disinfectant.
@jbond
@ProfLouiseL
@patrickhadfield Starmer's Labour won't do that, because they serve the same establishment.

New slogan:

Net Zero is not enough

(because we all know this is true - net zero is not enough - netting things off against each other is a fudge, I believe.)
