The great Tony Bennett has passed away at the age of 96. He was the last of his kind, a master of the American songbook. He may have left his Heart in San Francisco, but he won all of our hearts, from Sinatra to Lady Gaga. Be at peace, and sing to us now from the stars, Tony.

@georgetakei "While in the US Army stationed in Germany, #TonyBennett ran into a Black friend from New York and joined him for Thanksgiving dinner. Mr. Bennett’s commanding officer reprimanded him for associating with African Americans and transferred him to a different unit.

For the rest of his life, Mr. Bennett was a quiet political activist and advocate for civil rights."

@genecowan @georgetakei I knew Bennett was involved in the civil rights movement during the '60s, but this is the first time I've heard this story. Could you please cite the source of this? I'd like to share it.

@georgetakei Hard to think of anyone as loved across as many generations. Rest in peace, Tony Bennett.

@georgetakei On November 29, 2021 he performed his final public performance with Lady GaGa. While he was clearly suffering advanced dementia at that point, nonetheless, by all accounts, he gave a stunning and flawless performance, as if by instinct and memory.

I work in music and collect hit records. While my iTunes music library numbers 40,553 at current, only 30 are Tony Bennett. But it is a pretty good representation of his body of work.

@georgetakei he was indeed brilliant, although of late Rod Stewart (who would have thought it) has had a go at the classics with good results IMHO
@georgetakei New thing I learned today about Tony Bennett: He was one of the troops who #liberated #Dachau.
@georgetakei I’ve see several β€œhe was the last…” phrases β€” crooner, saloon singer. But, he was one of the last masters of the American Songbook, feels right
@georgetakei as a kid, I got inundated by Tony Bennett, Henry Mancini, Frank Sinatra, Steve, and Edie, all musicals. My mother played records 5 out of 7 days. Every week. A legend died. RIP.
@georgetakei to be fair not all the Dems

@georgetakei
I remember him walking around in NYC when I lived there 40 yrs ago. Just a regular guy, always smiling.
Will miss him. What a unique and incredible voice.
@georgetakei He gifted us with his talents & we are better for it ❀️ πŸ’” Sing on, Tony, sing on... 🎀 ✨
@georgetakei - the last of his kind? We still have Bob Dylan. A master of the American songbook without question.
