What I learned from taking a train across the US

Video producer Dean Peterson makes a 72-hour journey on Amtrak from LA to NYC to show its current state of operation. From getting kicked in the head by his sleeping seat mate to taking in sweeping views of the desert at sunset, Dean shows the highs and lows of being stuck on Amtrak for days on end.

@stux nice vid - I fully agree (took #Amtrak in '22 from NY to Seattle)

It's so sad to see some temples of #railway so empty and I hope they will be crowded sooner then later.

@stux I’ve taken it from DC to Flagstaff (and elsewhere)and I can say a few things. It’s semi-scenic…trains don’t always run through the best parts of the US. They use freight tracks.
Some railroads take vastly better care of their tracks than others. You can tell.
Rail crews have amazing engineers…because they break down in amazing places.
Finally. Lots of people in the Midwest think they can beat the train to the crossing. Most are wrong. Hit some fool on every trip.
@stux Transit for all should be the Democrat mantra.
@stux I took Amtrak from San Francisco <-> Los Angeles once to check it out. Significantly slower than driving, but also significantly less stress, and the seats were pretty comfortable (much more so by comparison to an airplane). Still, by comparison to European HSR - much less the sci-fi experience in Korea or Taiwan - it was pretty sad. On the flip side, the non-HSR train from Budapest to Vienna was grim.
