**CALLING ALL FRIENDS, ADVOCATES, AND ACTIVISTS** A leaked e-mail from a Texas Department of Protective Safety trooper documents the remarkably cruel measures Governor Greg Abbott has instituted at the border to deter crossings. These include hidden razor wire traps, the withholding of water even in extreme heat, and orders to push migrants—including children and infants—back into the Rio Grande where they might drown. The sight of razor wire to corral innocent human beings has echoes for me personally, when similar wire surrounded the Japanese American internment camps of my youth. We cannot let Governor Greg Abbott get away with this. I'm calling on you, my friends, advocates and activists, to help put a stop to this by signing the petition demanding the Biden Administration puts an end to these inhumane practices against migrants in Texas.

@georgetakei Here’s the CBS article that this petition references, in case the link in the petition doesn’t work. Seems like there’s still some fact checking to do, but this seems sincere. Good on the officer throwing a flag on this bullshit. It’s striking how he had no idea about the barrel traps — hard to tell if that came from up the chain or just some other, rogue asshole in the department.

My ex landlady in Beverly Hills, Keiko, whom I adore is 70 and very energetic. She tells of the story of her father who saw the writing on the wall and left the U.S. before the internment camps were a reality. He also dodged another huge bullet oversleeping and not being in the Nagasaki direct target area as the A-bomb was dropped that fateful morning.

Her uncle wasn’t so lucky or intuitive and the result was incarceration. Then, as now, this draconian cruelty is unacceptable.

@georgetakei My petition comment: "Immigration legislation is crucial. Until we can figure out how to welcome immigrants, how about we treat them like human beings?"

I live in Tucson, AZ, and immigration is a huge issue here. Sadly, Arizona does not have a good history of treating immigrants and asylum seekers humanely. So many people die in the southern Arizona deserts, it breaks my heart.

@georgetakei While I wholeheartedly agree this must be stopped, I don’t agree with making this the Biden Administration’s problem. I think that would backfire spectacularly.

Instead, put pressure on those actually responsible: Gov Abbott and the asshole Texas voters who elected him.
