Another important legal development in the effort to hold wrongdoers accountable for attempting to subvert the 2020 U.S. presidential elections: #Michigan state #AttorneyGeneral #DanaNessel today filed the first criminal charges to be brought against people who falsely claimed to be state electors. Nessel, a state AG I particularly admire, is doing something as important as any of the efforts to hold Trump accountable. 1/ (thread)

Michigan charges 16 Trump electors who falsely claimed he won the state

The charges are the first against Trump electors as investigations over attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election intensify across the country.

The Washington Post
The rot in the Republican Party runs deep, into its state and local branches. Because US political party power starts in the states, it is essential to combat criminal conduct by state Republican parties, such as Michigan’s, where 16 Republicans, including the Michigan co-party chairwoman submitted false paperwork to the National Archives and others, masquerading as legitimate electors. 2/ #LawFedi
Republican Party efforts to overthrow the legitimate winner of the 2020 U.S. Presidential election depended on states sending false electoral votes to the federal government. Such efforts required individuals who would pretend that Trump, rather than Biden, won the vote in their states. It may not be as dramatic as a physical assault on the Capitol but this conduct is extremely dangerous to democracy, precisely bc it is overtly violent. 3/ #LawFedi
@heidilifeldman And it is so dangerous it is now being charged as a crime in Michigan. Soon to happen in Arizona, Pennsylvania and Nevada. Cross your fingers...
@heidilifeldman Can she charge the Georgia, Arizona, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Nevada fake electors while she's at it?
