OK, the hosting + services bill for https://openbenches.org/ is coming due.

Looks like about Β£250 for the next year.

So, my options are:

πŸ‘• Sell OpenBenches branded T-Shirst & merch.

πŸ’· Push the sponsorship more on the site (using GitHub / Patreon / OpenCollective).

πŸ•΄οΈ Take VC funding of a few million dollars and try to dominate the bench-spotting market.

πŸ›οΈ See if there are any open-culture grants to help keep it going.

Any other bright ideas?

OpenBenches Welcome!

OK, while I wait for GitHub sponsorship to be approved, and T-Shirt designs to be finalised - here are some mock-up buttons to go on https://openbenches.org/

I don't think I'm going to A/B test them. So any thoughts or suggestions gratefully received.

OpenBenches Welcome!

OK gang! You can now buy @openbenches merch with a 15% discount at:

https://openbenches.myspreadshop.co.uk/

Every t-shirt, mug, hat, and water-bottle sold goes to keeping the project afloat.

@Edent @openbenches think Twitter share's not work on the purchase confirmation screen.
@jacattell
Hmmm. I'll check with the shop. Might be a Twitter API thing.
Thanks for your support.
@Edent out of interest, why did you choose https://www.spreadshirt.co.uk please? I'm looking for a merch supplier and wondered why

Spreadshirt

@jacattell
I used them for the GovGeeks shirts.
They're easy to use, quality is great, good customer service, and have a somewhat ethical stance.

They also do a 0% commission tier - so you can sell things with no markup and no profit. Which was handy for the "make things open" tees.

@Edent @openbenches Ordered! Thank you for putting this together πŸ™‚
@Edent What's the difference between swag and gear?
@alanbrookland same difference between things and stuff πŸ˜‰
@Edent In that case I would pick the Get OpenBenches gear and the Support OpenBenches buttons (but maybe with the shopping cart icon assuming gear is more than just clothes)

@Edent personally:

"Buy some swag"
"Donate to keep this site running"

πŸ™‚

@Edent Stick all of them on in a massive block. It drives the message home. I think I live in the memorial bench capital on the world. If you want to offer some stickers, I'll buy some and slap 'em on lamposts...
@david will do laptop stickers - but don't want people pissing off the council.
@Edent As a former local journalist, that's what councils are for πŸ˜‰
@Edent Oooh. Another idea: Ask local authorities for direct backing.

They're responsible for the benches anyway, and I'm sure you could persuade some of them into affording you a small grant
@Edent support or sponsor buttons and maybe β€œbuy us a coffee”
@Edent it was great but i understand those infrastructure costs are too much...maybe possible to add the benches to OpenStreetmap ?

@Edent When you say β€˜push sponsorships more’… I just had a look and I can’t see any mention of how to support OB on the site.

I’d be happy to chip-in a few quid. Preferably in a way that didn’t take a lot of fees or insist on adding VAT (side-eyes Patreon).

@bensmithuk yeah, I've been rubbish at it so far.
There are some sponsor links at https://github.com/openbenches/openbenches.org
I'll tart it up this weekend.
GitHub - openbenches/openbenches.org: OpenBenches.org - an open data repository for memorial benches

GitHub

@Edent I missed that, but I see them now. What’s the best option for you for ease / cost etc?

Also, if I donate, can I add β€˜OpenBenches Investor’ to my LinkedIn?

@bensmithuk I can endorse you for Open Benching on LinkedIn. And give you a speaking slot at BenchCon '24.

I think both GitHub Sponsors and Ko-Fi are fee-free. But I'm easy.

Not crypto. Obviously.

@Edent Do you get GitHub matched funding?
@Edent by "memorial" you really mean about a dead person, right? Around me most benches have plaques about either clubs, groups, or living people (sometimes a grandparent dedicating the bench to the grandchild).
I browsed through the site and I feel those would not qualify...
@signaleleven
Broadly speaking, yes.
There are a few which breach this rule - for example one of my favourites is https://openbenches.org/bench/1333
We're flexible. Up to a point.
It Was On This Bench In 2007 That The Notorious A

It Was On This Bench In 2007 That The Notorious A

@Edent yeah I just found the one about the sharks in the development blog :D
We'll see, I'll upload a few on my next doggy walk and let you decide :)

@Edent Hmm, seems similar to funding cemeteries or mausoleums.

Maybe a Niantic Labs A/R connection somehow?

@tlholaday METAVERSE OF BENCHES!

@Edent One hundred true fans participating in an annual, autumnal bench-visit event for 5Β£. An accordionist (playing Saint James’ Infirmary), walking solemnly from bench to bench in the company of a costumed mourner. Between benches, montage of member-supplied videos of their visits to benches not on the performers’ route.

Sad Keanu.

@Edent that price tag suggests you're burning through a lot of bandwidth/storage - or you're overspecced on your hosting.

Plus, there's one traditional revenue source not on your list, but it *does* involve at least *renting* your soul to the devil.

@ahnlak We have ~300GB of photos and use a significant amount of bandwidth, even after CDN optimisation. There's also the costs for reverse-geocoding, OCR, and other services.

No - we won't be running adverts.

@Edent ahh yeah; that kind of storage requirements is going to end up costing a bit.

Merch is probably the most realistic on the list then, but from experience rarely worth the effort 😞

@Edent I like number 2
@stevenfeldman Yup, that seems to be the obvious thing.
I'll set up GH sponsorship shortly.
@Edent I’ll chip in if you promise to do a talk on the business model of Open Benches for @geomob
@stevenfeldman @geomob
Haha! Done!
Donation tiers coming soon πŸ™‚
@Edent laptop stickers?
@xgebi A good plan!
Something for me to work on this weekend.
@Edent Superb colophon - learned of a few good services I can use for low or no cost projects (which, working in the third sector, is nearly everything)
@Edent I've only heard of this on Fawlty Towers, so forgive me if it's not a thing, but uh, could you have a "whip-round"? Pass the hat?
@Edent Sponsor real benches? πŸ˜„
@Edent Mini bench to put on your desk? Put supporters' names all over a real bench somewhere public-ish?
@mattround Ooooh! I like both ideas.
If we get lots of sponsorship and too many moneys, I'll absolutely buy a sponsors' bench.
@Edent hate to be the one to point this out, but someone has already started doing knock-off versions of your apparel...

@ollybenson
Our lawyers are aware and have been instructed accordingly.

@neil please prepare the standard "pistols at dawn" pre-trial letter 😁

@Edent Oeh, I wish I could help you
Never heard of this project but I'm amazed by it, you'll probabily see lots of contributions coming from me soon hehe!
@gaycookie looking forward to it!
@Edent We have quite some benches in my city that are memorial and I see none of those on there yet hehe!

Gives me also a good reason to go outside again and shoot some pictures with my new phone!
πŸ˜‡
@gaycookie shout if you need any help.
