I've been messing about with the Lemmy 🔁 Mastodon interop today and it has BLOWN MY MIND. 🤯

This excellent post from @vjprema explains how to use #Lemmy from your #Mastodon account. Amazing.

As @evan says, don't bet against the #fediverse.

This thing is 🔥.

Reddit exodus - Using Lemmy from my existing Mastodon

Many are turning to Lemmy as a viable Reddit alternative. Here is how to use your existing Mastodon account with Lemmy.

@charlesroper @vjprema @evan Very cool read. While there's definitely a lot of room to improve and grow, it's exciting to see the possibilities once more aspects of the #fediverse mature
@Anonypotimus @vjprema @evan It's a bit rough around the edges, but everything online was at one time. Feels really great to see and be a part of these green shoots (again) just like the early days. I miss this.
@charlesroper @vjprema @evan Yes yes yes. It would be unbelievable to have a browser-based client that provides the appropriate interface for cross posting like this. (Sounds difficult though!)
@alisynthesis @vjprema @evan I can envision web browsers evolve into web+fedi browsers. Agents for HTML *and* AP. C'mon @mozilla, forget AI, *this* is the new territory that needs to be explored.

@charlesroper @alisynthesis @vjprema @evan @mozilla

Absolutely ... the browser is the ultimate fediverse client because of the universality and power of HTML(+CSS/JS). Browsers just need to catch up.

@charlesroper @vjprema @evan a browser extension is the obvious next step, but i feel like there must be a more elegant way to do all of this. All of this should eventuality be possible without copy pasting or going to other servers urls. But I don't understand the ins and outs of ActivityPub well enough to know what the solution is. Any ideas?
@cubeofcheese There are a few browser extensions already. Have a search for "Mastodon browser extension", for example.
@charlesroper @vjprema @evan the fedi cant be stopped it is self-sustaining
@evan @vjprema @charlesroper When following a community you get all posts as disconnected new posts on mastodon
@charlesroper This is marvellous. Not only do we get to escape the original Tyannies Of The Bird Site Overtaken By Idiot Owners but the same technology allows us to escape the new Tyrannies Of The InternetNewsFederationAndDiscussion Site Overmonitorised By Idiot CEOs too.

@charlesroper I think the cool part is that this just a taster of what a common interface like this could do, like you could design websites with a limited subset of activitypub and provide easy rss style feeds for blogs while providing a direct means of sharing it.

The limitation of no having enough people engage with small but unique apps to make it worthwhile isn't a problem when it can still have the majority of it's features accessed remotely

@charlesroper @vjprema nice – thanks for sharing.
- would be interesting to see a mention of Kbin and if all the same applies.
@ottaross @vjprema I tried kbin as well, but for the communities I was playing around with, it didn't seem to be federating the stuff from Mastodon. I think it might be something to do with kbin posts requiring a link. When you post to Lemmy from Mastodon, it appears as a comment thread, not a link thread. I hope this can be tidied up in time. Perhaps both #Lemmy and #kbin could parse the first link found in the #Mastodon message as the link to use?
@charlesroper @ottaross It seemed a bit buggy with kbin when I tried. In my test, my reply did not show in kbin until about half a day later.
@charlesroper @vjprema @evan
Lemmy has been great so far. I've been seeing a lot of great conversations.
@charlesroper @vjprema @evan I wonder if there will start being "global" apps built with interfaces made to be compatible with different types of apps. (no idea if that makes sense)
@deebloo @charlesroper @evan I think I know what you mean. The problem I see is that currently the users "data" is intertwined with the type of Fediverse app that the users home server is running. It could be better if the a home server hosted a shared datasource, and all the fediverse apps were just different frontends into it. Like your home server could be running Lemmy, Mastodon, Pixelfed and Calckey, all with a shared datasource so a user could chose any frontend under same login
@vjprema @charlesroper @evan right but it's all activity pub. So you could build a brand new app that works with mastodon and others just via the protocol.
Solid (web decentralization project) - Wikipedia

@charlesroper @vjprema @evan not familiar with solid pods so not sure. My question is more around the UI and making something that works well across different sorts of social apps built using ActivityPub
@deebloo @charlesroper @vjprema so, ActivityPub has a built-in API that can take any kind of Activity Streams activities and distribute them to the network. It's how I envision that universality happening.
@evan @charlesroper @vjprema it only gets distributed if another server subscribes to that stream right? I'm still learning how all this works under the hood. so a mastodon server A will only get content from server B if some from A follows someone from B.
@deebloo @charlesroper @vjprema no, you can address someone directly and it will go straight there.
@deebloo @charlesroper @vjprema but it's an account-to-account protocol.
@evan @charlesroper @vjprema right I guess I just want to clarify (for myself) that content doesn't get pushed to different servers without user to user interaction of some sort.
@charlesroper @vjprema @evan Is it working again? For a while when I tried putting the URLs of posts/threads/instances in the Explore window, it kept saying nothing found.
@charlesroper @vjprema @evan I will totally check it out! I've been very uncomfortable maintaining a subreddit for indie creators. I kept it open because I realize people don't have the luxury of following their principles. If this is a good alternative, I will do my best to provide a new platform.

@charlesroper @vjprema @evan

This happens whenever I try now.

@Hyphlosion @charlesroper @evan I think this happens when you use a link which isn't the "Direct Link" (as referred to it in my article) on the instance where the post was made. To get this Direct Link, you need to click on the rainbow Fediverse icon under the post title. e.g. for your example its https://lemm.ee/post/1138909
Pokemon Home, Continuity and Nostalgia - lemm.ee

I recently got Pokemon Home and let me just say I love the continuity it provides. Not only can I play with nostalgic teams, but the trade’s on offer are the most busted things Ive seen in a long while. Requesting a lv 91-100 Pharaoh/La Reine trim Furfrou for a Kubfu? Sure that sucks, as there is no way to train one in the current gen, requiring a Pokemon bank enabled DS or a literal trip to another country, but its a legendary, so I kinda get it. But all that for a lv 5 Alolan Rattata? I feel like I’m back in the middle-school cafeteria getting fucked on trades again. Thanks Pokemon Home. “* * * *” 4/5 stars. it loses a point because i haven’t figured out how to get my box to actually be sorted by National Dex order for real and not just a search filter

@vjprema @Hyphlosion @charlesroper @evan

And you post into the search box?

@Hawkmoon Yeah you paste the "Direct Link" into search box on your home instance, then reply to the first search result that appears.
