A lonesome #linux #sysadmin at upper management meetings be like ...
The first time this happened to me, I showed up to a formal event wearing sandals, a t-shirt proclaiming the greatness of Linux, and jeans. Despite my casual attire, I was allowed entry by the security team, who recognized me as being from the IT department and assumed I was there to ensure the computers were functioning properly. LOL. (1/2)
Nobody said anything, but you know they were looking at me and like, WTF this guy is doing here? Is he lost? Who allowed him to join our elite event? Maybe it was all in my head because they were too busy with whatever they were doing that day. I still dislike attending social gatherings even now. I find solace in peaceful environments like the seaside or a park. Large crowds make me anxious and uncomfortable. It's just not my cup of tea. (2/2)
@nixCraft I feel you. 20 years as a Unix / Linux / Network Admin, now doing embedded development.
@dperson @nixCraft I'm the opposite. I did embedded low level programming. Now doing IT infra things. Because why not? Learn every day new things.
@melroy @nixCraft that's what drove me too. Always did lots of automation / scripting, slowly moving more and more towards development 🤷‍♂️
@dperson @nixCraft the money decent just being a Linux admin? Relative to doing software dev.
@kylefromit @nixCraft it's in the same ballpark overall. I didn't (nor would I recommend) making a decision based on that.
@dperson @nixCraft yeah. I’m looking for stable work life balance, pref remote. Benefits. I came from a startup for 4y which was a super toxic place so I’m just taking a break right now, looking for something good.

@nixCraft thanks for sharing! Everyone is different and this is good.

Sometimes in social events I don’t get many jokes or don’t get why something is funny. Maybe because I think of most thinks to technically and in too detail.

@nixCraft you have many kindred spirits! The trick is to not mind being different and indeed embrace it. Doesn’t make others bad or wrong. Plenty of room in the world for us all! That being said, give me a empty hiking trail or a train museum any day.
@nixCraft you know who else shows up at black tie events in jeans and comfortable shoes? The wealthiest people in the room. Eccentric tech billionaire vibe.
@nixCraft I remember being in a meeting at Intel one day in the 1980's with my CEO and a few of their execs to work out a deal for a project I was heading. I was the only one in the room without a coat and tie. But whenever a technical question came up, they would all look at me rather than my CEO. I came away realizing that my non-management attire gave me a certain credibility.

@nixCraft At my previous job, we were chronically short on meeting rooms. One day we booked the only one that was free. When we were there, the owner of the company entered, looked around disgustedly and said, "hmm, technicians [sic]" and left.

5 minutes later she came back "This meeting room is reserved for the management board, if I see any of you technicians here again it'll have consequences".

It wasn't even marked as a somehow special room in Outlook 🤷‍♂️

@nixCraft so I assume, seaside/park are aliases for your local environment while "social gatherin" is an alias for a production environment, right?

@nixCraft Ha, happened to me aswell on a real hot summer day, similar outfit, wearing flipflops short cargo pants and a nerd shirt, no idea which one of the many I have... :D

Reason was I did expect the meeting on a different day.

The ppl just said that they envy me when we talked business, because they are sweating in their business suits. :D
There was no ignorance or something, just honesty. Thanks to that it was a good business meeting.

@nixCraft at a job I had a long time ago I found out later that people knew me as the guy that wore sandals to work.
@nixCraft I sold a PowerBook 190 to get money to buy my first suit to attend a formal work Christmas Party when I was in my 20s
@nixCraft Lmao this guy was wearing the classic linux swag
@nixCraft The wealthy elite has to conduct small-talk to get to know each other. We have funny t-shirts and laptop stickers. It's efficient, and communicates well over significant distance. Shirt and tie + no stickers is automatic red flag.
@nixCraft it's too true. There is a level of respect for the invite, but...
@nixCraft he Mark Rutte (from the Netherlands), just behind the man himself.. And his "friends" and very funny to see.
@nixCraft Being a hunk with masive balls and sweet leadership skillz?
@nixCraft Bwahahaha! Truth be told, he isn’t wanted there.

@nixCraft

That’s just insulting! Zelensky is worth 10 of the others.

@nixCraft a doer mixed in with a bunch of empty, expensive suits. Sounds about right.
@nixCraft When there's an event on the office floor shared between the IT Ops people and the Sales people.

@nixCraft

If only we had more like him…!

@nixCraft do you have any suggestions where to learn to be a sysadmin linux?
